Ok, just suspose you find a floor plan you like on X brand motor home and you have to decide which engine to use, the 8.1 Vortec or one of the optional diesel engines. Lets say the diesel option is an extra $7,000.00 and in your area, diesel costs 50-60 cents/gal. more than gas. Would you pay extra for the diesel or would you just pocket then extra money and go with the tried and true 8.1? Unless I had more money than I knew what to do with, I think I would go with the 8.1, because not only would it cost less, but I wouldn't have to pay the extra sales tax on the $7,000.00 upcharge, and paying 60 cents a gallon extra kind of wipes out the extra value of increased MPG from the diesel. Furthermore, if a 8.1 is well maintained and will last for 250,000 miles, how many people actually keep their motor homes for 250,000 miles? Well, what would you do under these circumstances? For me that is an easy answer as I once had a diesel and the wife and I prefer the gas and of course me the 8.1. But now that there is other options on the floor plan I would have to consider the rear gas when the time comes.

My vote would be for the gas engine also. From what I have seen the guys with diesels don't keep them and run up the miles. Many are sold with rather low miles, so why the diesel? My last MH, a gasser, had over 135,000 miles and was still going strong.

I wouldn't exactly call this a scientific poll, but thus far the score is 5 (gas) vs 0 (diesel). Bagman57.

Well Ill have to throw my 2cents in and add that the total cost of the motorhome would have to be considered as the diesel is a 7k option but maby adds just 5k to the real cost of the rig. Then you have to consider what the diesel adds to the resale figure and you might find out that that diesel platform only costs a few thousand bucks real money. ALMOST the same cost of that UltraPower performance add on. Just a thought...

Now add in the soot, it is getting better, more expensive fuel, higher maintenance, i.e., oil changes, filters, etc., noise level. But now with rear engine gas GVW will not be so much of an issue anymore. It will be like do you want an RCA or a Zenith.

If the diesel version of the "UFO" gets 20% better fuel economy, but gas cost 20% less per gallon (Michigan fuel costs), I see the only advantage of the diesel being a longer cruising range. The gas version should have a higher ccc. Bagman57

Probably go with the 8.1 as well. Even $5000 upgrade charge might not be worth it if you don't put a lot of miles on the coach.

Now if the right deal comes along on a diesel UFO (set on dealer lot a while...) then we'll have to see. Most uf us do not order a coach and buy what is on the dealer lot....
