If I need to replace the ignition switch, would I be able to give a Chevy dealer the VIN and he could get one for me????

That's what this is and it's almost been 1 day and no replies except for yours.
Guess I will go on Open Roads forum, will probably have better luck there.

erpa, Should you or anyone need an immediate answer and you want to take the time to do a little "Finger Walking" please use our "Search" feature and enter "P32 ignition switch."

I'm thinking that you are going to come up with a lot of hits rather than waiting ....

This search has information on the problem I had with parts #'s to correct. The wiring harness had to be protected going over the metal bend at top of steering post from abrasions.

If it is a workhorse I suspect a Chevy dealer could get it, however he does not need the VIN to get the switch.. and I doubt a workhorse vin would do him any good

What you need is the GM part number for that switch.. Alas, I can't help you

The VIN is needed if you need to code-cut a key though

For what it's worth, the ignition switch left us stranded and required a long tow last summer to a Chevy dealer that was able to diagnose the problem and find a swith at another Chevy dealer in a bigger city about 65 miles away.

Post mortem from the looks of the old switch, there has got to be an issue at the design / engineering level. This switch had way to much current going through it for a good while to have melted the connectors into the plastic the way it did.

It is a saftey issue also in my opinion. I'm not meaning to bad mouth workhorse in any way. I like my MH on the workhorse chassis, and I have been able to get quality, albeit expensive service when needed. But the way this problem presents itself is a saftey hazard. You haven't lived until your tooling down the highway at 60 mph and all of a sudden everything starts flashing on and off, and the electric parking brake starts kicking in and out. Throw into the mix that it was my third day of owning and driving my 2001 Winnebago Brave, and it added up to pretty much a bad day. Make that 3 days.

Dmiles welcome to irv2.
Sorry to hear of your problem. Some MFG's will over load the switch and cause the problem you had. They have come up with a kit to remove all the extra amperage through switch using relays and extra wiring to remove the over load.
My problem was not a burnt up switch but a wire in harness that chaffed thou insulation going over bend top of steering wheel causing short to ground and blowing 40 amp fuse after heating up wire causing the smoke.
The Chev dealer replaced everything with a better ignition wiring system. They did not place a wire shield around wires over bend I did when I found a burr on metal bend. I do adjust steering wheel allot and watch the wires in harness flex over this bend and figured it warranted some protection so wiring would be better protected.

007, thanks for the reply. If you know where I could find a part number for this kit for the ignition switch that would help me out quite a bit. All the dealer was able to replace was the switch. I was thankful for that, considering I was up against the clock to get home so I could get back to work on time. With a holiday weekend coming up the service manager actually made the 65 mile trip each way to get the replacement switch in his own car. I was at the dealership all day, but no way I would have made it home on time if it weren't for thos folks. I'm too old to remember the details that far back, but I'm going to dig up the paperwork on that Chevy dealer and give them a plug in the "favorite service center" thread. I seem to remember it was in Sumter, SC.
