There is a lot of reading available at NHTSA website regarding Workhorse brake issues related to model years 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 on the W20 and W22 chassis. Here is a summary of the number of complaints filed that fall under ‘service brakes’ in relation to the total complaints filed for that specific model year and chassis.

2002 W20:
3 out of 3 complaints filed were brake-related
2002 W22:
16 out of 23 complaints filed were brake-related

2003 W20:
9 out of 9 complaints filed were brake-related
2003 W22:
31 out of 32 complaints filed were brake-related

2004 W20:
8 out of 9 complaints filed were brake-related
2004 W22:
21 out of 26 complaints filed were brake-related

2005 W20:
1 out of 2 complaints filed were brake-related
(2nd one was brake-related, but complaint was regarding the 'parking brake')
3 out of 3 complaints filed were brake-related

You can search and then review/read the complaints at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/ and make your own conclusions as to IF a problem exists.

Can't edit my original post, of course, so here is a little more information:

"2005 W20:
1 out of 2 complaints filed were brake-related
(2nd one was brake-related, but complaint was regarding the 'parking brake')
3 out of 3 complaints filed were brake-related"

should have been:

2005 W20:
1 out of 2 complaints filed were brake-related
(2nd one was brake-related, but complaint was regarding the 'parking brake')
2005 W22:
3 out of 3 complaints filed were brake-related

As a comparison, searching 'Ford' and then selecting 'Motorhome', there were no brake-related complaints filed for model years 2001- 0 out of 9, 2002- 0 out of 9 and for 2003- 0 out of 6. Starting in model year 2004, the 'motorhome' category at the NHTSA website is gone and I would have to know the specific motorhome model numbers Ford used to be able to pull up that information... if a Ford owner can provide the model numbers, I'd be happy to look the information and post... I want the information to be as fair as possible for Workhorse.

Thank you, 3 complaints on my chassis (2005 W-22) two legitimate one questionable.

The two were both "Stuck caliper" complaints

There are two known causes of this

One may be affected by maintenance

The other can affect any vehicle, any make, any model, any car, truck bus or motor home, Even motorcycles. Any vehicle with hydraulic brakes.

Hmmm...I wonder why my 2001 Chassis complaint doesn't show. We all know WHCC has had the same problems since they started building the W22 chassis'.

One of the 2005's was mine and it was suggested lack of maintenance may have caused the problem ,until I said I was not due for my first oil change yet. You should have heard the silence.

Actually a lack of maintenance MAY have still been the problem, In fact it is very highly likely

You should know that maintenance is not only your job as the owner, but before you owned it it was the Motor Home Factory's job as they owned it... Now My chassis was manufactured in August 2004, it is an '05 (per the vin) and the coach was not made till MAY the following year, Thus for seven months it sat, out exposed to the elements, and the factory SHOULD have lubed the pins and performed other service on it as a matter of course.. In your case they did not.. In mine.. I'm not so sure. I've smelled hot brakes but an IR thermometer was unable to see any cause for alarm.

Next: I don't know about you but I hire oil/lube jobs,or have in the past (I may do 'em myself now that the warranty has passed) The local ASC has a real good L.O.F. deal by my standard and it is just not worth the 1/4 hour they charge (even though it takes longer) for me to do the job.

Of course this means I am trusting that technician to know his.... ur.. grease gun... from a hole in the ground.

And finally.. As I said of the 3rd one.. It can happen to ANY vehicle with hydraulic brakes, ANY MAKE, ANY MODEL, ANY SIZE, all that's required is hydraulic brakes with hoses.
