Is mobile 1 gear oil safe to add to rear differential if it is low?

The oil in my rear axle differential is low and I need to add some oil. Is it safe just to use mobil 1 75W-90 syntehetic gear oil to bring it back to the correct level?

Mobil claims to be compatible with other oils. I for one would be comfortable with toping off that gear oil. However, this thread has the word oil in it. I am sure others will also throw in some opinions.

Yes. With the vehicle on a level surface, fill the differential until the fluid begins to wet the threads in the fill hole.

Why is your rear end low on lubricant?

Its looks like I have a seal leak because there is oil on my rear tire. I have to take it in for service and want to make sure that the level is correct before making the 20 mile trip.

OK ... Is it leaking on the inside or the outside from the hub?

It is located on the inside. I looked underneath and saw some oil dripping down the real left inside dually and saw that the brake rotor was a little wet also.

OK that's your inside seal. I thought we could have done an easy fix there but no joy! Gotta pull the wheel.
