I have a 2004 W-22 chassis and have had progressive problems with getting the key out of the ignition. When this occurs, if I restart the motor, run the shift lever slowly through all the gears and turn it off, most of the time I can remove the key from the ignition.
Anyone have this problem or a solution?
Thanks,
Marv

Usually it is just a mechanical interlock, so I doubt if it is necessary to restart the engine. Have you tried just moving the shift lever out of Park and then back in, firmly? Mine tends to hang up a bit sometimes and the spring on the shift lever isn't ewnough to pull the lever fully into Park. I have to give it a bit of a push now and then. Don't know if that could be your problem or not.

The shifter must be all the way in PARK to remove the key. Just like Gary said try pushing the shifter firmly up into PARK before turning off the ignition. If you find you have to use excessive force then you may need to have your transmission shifter cable adjusted.

Hi Gary and Skip,
First, thank you for your reply and help.
Yes, I have done what you have recommended and it still hangs up. I do not want to use to much pressure when placing it in park to avoid bending or breaking something.
Again, thank you.
Marv

In addition to what the others said, try pushing the shift lever toward the dash (or pull it toward you) once it's in park. I've noticed on mine that sometimes the shift lever needs to be "put" into a position to remove the key. I just can't remember if I pull it toward me or push it away. I think I push.

the same thing happens occasionally on mine.
the shifter goes into park, but does not get quite fully pulled forward toward the dash.
I just push the shifter towards the dash 1/4 inch or so until it hits the stop and everything works as it should.

Thanks for all your replies. I am sorry this has happened to others. I will give your suggestions a try when I get it back from the dealer.
Again, thank you.

I've had two W22's and they both were the same. Once you put it in PARK, then you have to push the shift lever forward a bit toward the windshield, then the key will come out. I thought I had a unique problem, until I bought my second W22 and it worked the same.

I've had this occur quite often until I found out you have to push the shift lever forward towards the dash and then it will release the key. Also try taking the pressure off the steering wheel by turning it one way or the other. This happens often if you park with the front wheels cocked. This has also happened coming down off the jacks and it puts the front wheels off center. Just turn the steering wheel to remove the pressure and the ignition will work fine....

After taking the motor home back to the dealer for the problem, and, duplicating it twice while there, they could not fix it. The dealer states they called Workhorse who they stated acknowledges the problem, but, has no fix for it.
While irritating, I can live with it provided it doesn't leave me stranded, especially, after the warranty runs out.
Several people said they did not have this problem. While I am happy for you, mine didn't occur immediately, but, after several months of use.
