I have a 2004 Allegro 32 BA on a Workhorse. I never noticed an engine knock before but since my last oil change which was maybe 500 miles ago, i hear a knock at start up that lasts for about 30 seconds to a minute. I used Valvoline 5w30 ande a new filter. Don't know what's going on. Let me add that it does it when cold as well as after it sits for a 1/2 hour after being run. The clack sounds like it's coming from the area at the oil pan. It doesn't sound good to me. Motor has 15,000 miles on it. I'm in California where the weather is mild.

Dnebout, If you are sure there is sufficient oil in the system, I would re-change the oil filter. , and make CERTAIN that it is the correct one for the application..possibly the wrong one, or a fulty one.. I trust the oil level is OK, no leaks??.

What you are experiencing is normal for the 8.1. Just so long as the noise goes away in a short period of time not exceeding 30 to 60 seconds - it's not a problem. There has been extensive articles and arguments developed over piston slap but in your case since the noise goes away pretty quickly it's not something that I would worry about.
PS, What kind of oil filter?

Dnebout says his "knock" didn't appear till after his last oil change.. I'd still change the filter, and verify the oil level...rgr...

It's a Fram filter. No leaks. Levels are correct. 30 to 34 PSI oil pressure at idle. Is the weight too low. Maybe I should go to 10w30.
RGR,
I'm not sure that this knock wasn't there before the oil change.
Driver,
Does your coach do the same thing?
Thanks,
Dave

Did you have 5W30 in there before this oil change?
How bad is the knock? While some piston slap is normal a bad crank pin journal on the crank shaft is another matter.
If you didn't have 5W30 before and did not have the knock consider switching back to the heavier oil.
The filter could be suspect also, so I would change both.
BTW: The 8.1L engine in my previous coach after 11 years and 65,000 miles did not have a knock at startup.

Dave, thats pretty good idle O/P, I assume thats cold.. My 8.1 is the only one I have any experience with, and so I've never heard the "8.1 slap", but typicaly piston slap noise is "lighter" than "crankshaft noises, especially main bearings. I would still change the oil filter, a few bucks more, but I would use a OEM unit.. Its a quick way to get folks excited to discuss o/f brands, but I've seen alot of faulty filters, but never an OEM..rgr...

Dave, my previous MH had the 8.1 engine. I had the oil changed at a small express type lube center in Boise. I noticed a knock the next morning on startup and like yours it quickly went away. After a couple of days of this I stopped ar Cowboy Ford in Jackson, WY (it was handy) where they changed out the "generic" oil filter. That solved the knock.

I bought the coach from a guy in Iowa and drove it back here to California. I don't know what weight oil it had in it.
My warranty expires in may of this year. I'll try the OEM filter with 5w30. If that doesn't work I'll try it with 10w30. If it doesn't go away, I will get my oil analyzed. I better get it done before May.
Thanks

For what it's worth. I would consider changing to a NAPA Gold 1060 1 quart filter. I would also use a full-syn oil like Mobil 1. I really like the Quakerstate Advanced full syn.
I used to push a quart of mobil 1 out every 3,000 miles but after switching to Quakerstate Advanced full syn I don't push any. For me QuakerState is more bang for the buck and costs about 2 dollars a quart less then Mobil 1.
Runs cooler! The 1 quart Napa Gold 1060 filter would allow you to use an even 7 quarts at change time.

For what it is worth I would like to stick my 2 cents in.
I have an '04 Adventurer on a 03 Workhorse with 8.1l engine and change my oil every 3000 miles when possible or at the most 4000 miles. I use Valvoline 10W30 Oil and a Fram Filter and never have a knock when I start it up. In fact I use the same oil and filter make on both my cars and boat motor with no problem.
In my estimation the 5W30 is for very cold climates being oil would not be so thick and get up there quick. I can't see paying extra bucks for OEM filter when it isn't needed. BTW the 5 in 5W30 means when it is cold and when it warms up it goes to 30W
