The final orders for the 8.1L engine will be filled in Sept 09. Looks like WCC will be an all diesel chassis in 2010. Will this apparent move open-up the market for Ford? Thoughts?

Does International still make gas powerplants? The recent announcement of International's Workhorse division acquiring the Monaco assets mentioned that Monaco will be built on the Workhorse chassis, using International engines. I know International has several diesel engines, and they used to have gas engines that were generally speaking clones of GM products - maybe they'll just use those?

If WHCC doesn`t come up with a new gas powerplant Ford will definately jump in marketshare. Don`t see how a deisel can compete pricewise.

Hi guys!
You know, we often spoke about this day and Workhorse is not going to abandon installing a gasoline engine in a W series chassis anytime soon. GM has an entire lineup of "LS" (there are many variants) series engines which are currently in production for use in a gas powered truck chassis.
I don't expect that Workhorse will go entirely diesel although the technology is in place so that it could if the situation demanded it.
It has also be stated that Ford isn't going to be producing their V-10 after the 2010 model year either so they are currently developing a smaller V8 for use in the motorhome and truck chassis.
I used to work on International gas engines. The one that was near and dear to me was the 345 with its weird firing order, 84365721. I don't expect to see ITE making a gasoline engine unless they buy the rights to the L18 and start producing it at one of their plants. Weirder things have happened!
I understand that Workhorse currently has a replacement gasoline engine under development -- so stay tuned for a high horsepower small block geared up hauling machine with just enough torque to keep things interesting.
Now the timing stinks with the announcement today of a Chapter 11 filing. I am expecting that the engineers that were working at GM on the small block L18 replacement project might be challenged at the moment for a paycheck. So who knows how all of that is going to unravel.
Workhorse uses the L18 and so does Mercury Marine Engines.

Now would be a good time for Navistar to buy whats left of GM's medium duty truck business.

The new CAFE standards will kill the medium truck market, if the GVWR is 10K or less they will have to meet the new standards.

The GVWR of a 1-ton (350/3500 series) dually pickup is over 10K. Medium duty trucks carry higher GVWRs than this.

Correct; medium duty is usually the Class 4, 5 and maybe even Class 6 trucks.

There is some thought that Workhorse will use the 6 liter supercharged LS (Corvette ) engine with the designation of LT. 400 HP with 390lbs of Torque. Make a great engine for the R-22 UFO.

IMHO, 390ft lbs of torque would be a dog.

I believe the LS engine would be considered a high performance engine, rather than a heavy duty engine.

Mike, You would be amazed at what they can do with gears. Archimedes said he could move the earth given the right lever. I expect the statement that was made hundreds of years ago was intended for an instance just like this.
There will be a gasoline engine in an RV chassis after 2010 .... unfortunately manufacturers are going to be limited by the government as to how big they get and how much stuff it puts out in the atmosphere. If it were up to the President I can guarantee everything is going to get a lot smaller and greener ....
