Hey everyone! Nancy and I are taking a month long trip to the Grand Canyon and Albuquerque NM in Spetember, starting Labor Day Saturday.

In August 2009, I plan on scheduling a service at my WH service center, Gallo GMC Truck Sales in Vineland NJ.

My RV is a 2005 Fleetwood Bounder on a WH W22 chassis, and will have around 24,000 miles on it as we start our trip.

I've had the transmission serviced in the fall of 2008 and changed out to Transynd.

I will change motor oil/filter and install OEMY's fuel filter device and filter prior to leaving, but what other service should I request from Gallo?

I've never had the brake fluid changed, the differential oil changed, so things like that I plan on having done...what else within reason should I prepare for or add to my service list?

GerryB54, Within reason - I would opt not to change my differential fluid. It's synthetic and basically only requires checking the level and adding fluid if required. Oemy recently changed his differential fluid. He reported it to be clean and he offered that he would have chosen to keep the old fluid due to cost and low ROI.

I would add checking the fluid levels in my front wheel bearings to the list.

Sorry, I actually misposted...should have said "checked"...thanks.

Any critical spare parts you think I should have on board?

Owners are wanting to carry a spare fan belt. I have had mine changed 3 times so far so I'm OK in that department.

The filter adapter really belongs to Glenn Norman (OEM Engineering).

Sorry, Dale...you'll always be blamed for it!

I stand corrected...but I knew this info anyway...thanks for working on it at one time, anyway.

FYI, there is a Workhorse service center in both Flagstaff and Kingman, AZ.
Flagstaff is about 40 miles east of Williams,AZ, which is where the road to the Grand Canyon takes off from. Canyon Gateway RV park is where we stayed and it was quite nice, easy on/off and close to town. It's also far enough from the Santa Fe RR that you don't get jolted out of your shorts everytime a train rolls through town, and there are lots of them. Tou still hear them but it's not bad.

Kingman is located about 100-110 miles west of Williams. It's either mostly uphill or downhilll depending which direction you are going.

Have a good trip.

I'm going down my to do list of items for our trip finally...a little over a month away.

Changed out the fuel filter assembly yesterday with OEM Engineering filter/adapter, install went smoothly.

Changed oil/filter today/used NAPA Gold 1060 filter

Greased chassis zerk fittings today, and here is my question:

How many are there on the 2004 W22 chassis? Did I miss any?

I found the front and rear steering drag link - 2 total fittings
I found the front steering knuckles - 2 total fittings
I found the steering tie rod ends - 2 total fittings
I found the universal joints - 4 total fittings (or was one the prop shaft slip joint?)
I found the brake pedal relay lever pivot - 1 fitting (AKA brake bell crank grease fitting?)

This is a total of 11 zerk grease fittings.

I could not find the parking brake clevis pin...is this a zerk fitting or just a lubrication point?

Any explanation on the prop shaft slip joint lubrication?

Is the brake pedal relay lever pivot (as described in the WH service guide Lubrication Points for W series page 96) the same as the brake bell crank grease fitting (pictured in the guide page 70) or did I miss this fitting?

On reading some of the other topics/posts on the subject, are there more than 1 on the universal joints? I only found/greased one per joint.

Gerry: There are 3 zerks on the passenger side steering components, 5 on the driver's side, 1 on the brake "bell crank" under the hood, and one on each U-Joint, and 1 on the DS slip joint. I think the correct total is therefore 14. ED

There should be 5 fittings on the drive shaft 4 universals and a slip joint.

Good job.

There are supposed to be "14" grease fittings. I think you missed the fittings on the top of the kingpins.

Lubrication point only

I apply 6 good pumps and let it go. You are never going to fill that void.

There is a single fitting on the relay rod located about mid way on the shaft facing you.

On the Workhorse there's only a single fitting per universal.

Thanks everyone!

Looks like I need to find the two on the top of the kingpin (is this the steering knuckle WH refers to?) and one more on the drive shaft, either a universal joint I missed or the prop shaft slip joint.

That would give me 14 total.

On the drive shaft, seems there was the front universal joint, the second joint I thought was the prop shaft slip joint (it looked different than the universal joint), then two more universal joints toward the rear differential...maybe I missed one or I'm not seeing the prop shaft slip joint?

The WH diagram on page 96 of the guide was a little sketchy...

I'll check this morning.

On Edit: I see that I did lube all 4 universal joints (red caps on them)...so I'm not seeing the prop shaft slip joint. I also found the 2 front steering knuckle fittings on the tops that I had missed.

Any help on finding the prop shaft slip joint?

I'm a little concerned about having my brake system checked/lubed/fluid changed at my WH Service Center. I've never had any brake problems to date with 24700 miles on the chassis, 12,700 by me in the last two years.

As I've read the posts on the brake problem over the years, many seemed to have problems after they had their slide pins lubed...coincidence? I just don't know any more.

I would like to have the brake fluid flushed/changed, and am considering doing this myself or with my professional mechanic neighbor.

Should I schedule a brake inspection/service at my chosen WHSC or just change out the brake fluid?

Gerry,

If you will be close by Flagstaff and in need of service, I highly recomend Flagstaff Service Center. We just got back from our month of July vacation and our AC went out in Monument Valley. We had to drive to Flagstaff to find a reputable service center to fix our AC.

Jason who is the service manager was top notch and took care of us right away since we were on vacation and in desperate need of our AC.

Ron
