I just recently returned froma short trip, less then 50 miles. The indicator on the dash said "Low engine oil level", I checked the oil three times and it was OK. The last oil change I did, I used "Mobil One". Could sythetic oil cause this reading and if so, how do I reset the warning message or should I have it checked out. Also, on an unrelated (hopefully) the engine ran a little rough on exceleration. It seemed to be missing occassionaly, it was itermittent like from bad gas. I had just filled up the tank so I have nearly a full tank of gas. I changed the gas filter about 500 miles ago. I don't know if I should let the gas work it's way through or should I take it in for a check up?

I have a 2005 Sea Breeze with a 8.1L engine that is kept in a garage and has 19,000 miles.

My guess is the oil sending unit , also the rough running is the known plug wires. Change the sending unit and plugs with the wires and your problems will go away

We got the low oil warning about half way home from picking up our motorhome when it was new. Turned out to be a bad oil level sending unit. The sending unit is available from most Chevrolet dealers, which will probably be faster than getting it from Workhorse.

The rough running is probably unrelated and could be any number of things including burned plug wires or bad gas.

If it was raining during your trip water injested into the air filter would result in a skip. In the case of the oil level sensor I would make sure the connection to the sensor was ok to start with.

It was not raining. I am not a government agency so the idea of throwing money at a problem to see if I can fix it does not compute. I need to do some more research before comminting my limited resourses. I thought I had read some place that using synthetic oil would cause the sensors to not respond properly. Does anyone know if the error message resets itself or does it need to be done manually? I am under the impression that if the rough acceleration was due to a faulty wire that the roughness would be somewhat systematic or consistantly spaced. The problem seems to be random and goes in spurts. Would it be all right to burn the tank of gas without causing further problems?

Phil,

Once the sensor is fixed the computer will reset the light. I've run mobil 1 in two 8.1 engines with no sensor problem. That was not the cause. Any good mechanic shop with latest scan equipment can check your computer codes and tell you one of the plug wires is bad. No need to change plugs for years most likely. The chances of you getting bad gas are not really a problem unless is was off the beaten path that does not sell often. Did you put a larger oil filter on engine than original, starting out with low level? Reading the stick correctly? I've done that trick.
