Yes to all you said. I have driven forward or around the block and come back and grease again and get the purge I need. Sometimes you need a rubber mallet or put a block of wood against the drriveshaft and hit it with a heavy hammer on the opposite side of the bearing cup that will not purge. This can make a little clearance between the cup and center cross joint that will let it purge.

It is also practice to lower your front jacks all the way and remove the weight off the steer axle before you apply grease to the king pin fittings (4). I will rotate the pins from lock to lock in between applications.
