I went with the Magnums for $150 instead of the Extreme Magnums.

Upon further review; these are the wires that I have. No boots. UP set me a new set of shields. Been running these for a while with no problems.

I wrote this in August of 2015
"Precious Metal!
Installed as OEM in the 8.1L Engine are platinum tipped plugs. The next generation of plugs are Iridium tipped plugs and are a great upgrade that you may want to consider for your engine. The Iridium plugs are made by AC and are type, 41-101. The plugs were gapped to .045. Using a wire gauge you want to feel a light drag between the tip and the wire electrode.
Since many of our machines are getting a little of the geriatric side, I chose to buy the last set of spark plug wires that I will ever use. Branded as UltraPower Magnum Plug Wires, these wires are described as Maximum Duty featuring "solid" stainless steel cores wrapped by silver plated copper conductors wire. The Magnums must be used in conjunction with the GM factory heat shields. Pn# 15336959. I got 8 brand new shields.
Billed as absolutely the BEST wires, these wires are used by NASCAR engine builders and are designed for maximum performance under severe conditions.
The wires each feature an RFI collar to prevent static on your radios. These wires are measured at zero ohms."

I bought the Taylor 409 Extremes a few years back. Installed them with the stock metal heat shields. They took care of the problem for a couple of years but then the popping under load came back earlier this year. To my surprise, one of the Taylor wires left its crimp on the plug when i went to remove it. And yes, i do know the correct way to remove spark plug wires. Thought Taylor might help out with a replacement but it wasn't to be. Went ahead and replaced with Ultrapower Magnums. Time will tell but after reading so many good reviews, i feel confident that they'll hold up. I was advised to use the stock metal heat shields on my 8.1 installation.

At this time, I was provided with new shields and no socks. I am also using Iridium AC plugs gapped at .045. I have not had any issue with the wires since I changed the wires and plugs. Jon said that there's nothing that would keep the wires from firing unless of course the core is too close to a ground if a burnout occurs. You know, since I upgraded the wires, I just don't worry about it any more.

I did burn out a 11mm Taylor with boots on. (#7) Was not happy about that. I even know where it happened.
I talked to Jon back in July after I got the wires.

I left my Iridium plug gap as they were at .060.

I believe there is no problem with the inner core of my wires. I think it is burnt through the boot or wire near the exhaust manifold and jumping to ground under heavy load and high RPMs. This was the case with all the wires I burnt in the past. The motorhome runs great during normal driving. Mine was always the #5 wire.

I was skeptical of the socks, especially since the boots are the same design as the stock wires and will accommodate the shields. I might try to get a replacement and add the shields.

Not aimed at you personally but a higher octane DOES NOT DELIVER MORE POWER!

It is to avoid preignition. Yes it lights harder so on a low compression engine it might actually lower performance. Look at vehicles that require premium such as high performance cars or crotch rocket bikes. Then look at their compression ratio. With lower octane fuel their compression will actually detonate the fuel early. That is why race fuel is even higher than pump gas (and in many cases oxygenated which is an entire topic itself).

Do not waste your money running premium in an 8.1L unmodded RV. Fix the real issue if it is predetonating rather than masking it as another poster typed.

I was looking at the Taylor Web site to determine the warranty period. I found a discrepancy. One place said 5 year Unlimited and on the same page it says 90 days. I emailed Taylor to confirm the warranty period. They responded saying prior to July 2016 it was 5 years and beginning July 2016 it was reduced to 90 days. I purchased mine July 7, 2016. Go Figure!

I was just wondering what your experience was when running an UltraPower tune on your 8.1L engine? The guys up in Centralia, WA when running the rig on a Dyno recorded better performance with Hi-Test gasoline and they asked me to try it out.

I reported back that the difference wasn't all that "seat in the pants" noticeable except for the wallet drain however on a scope I'm sure it shows up.

So yes sir it's 87 Octane for me.

If you need 1 Taylor, 11mm wire, I have a few spares.

If you run high octane fuel the timing tables can be further advanced without pre-detonation occurring. Not as noticeable of a gain in a coach but definitely noticeable in an unloaded truck!

I use 93 Octane in my 1.9999L EcoBoost engine. It's recommended and it increases performance. On a huge ol' lumbering stump puller like the 8.1L, as you observed, it does great on 87.

I have yet to troubleshoot the wires. When I get a chance I will replace the #5 wire with the stock one I removed and see if the problem goes away, if not I will try the #7. If I pinpoint it to a bad wire I may take you up on your offer.

Thanks DriVer

Since I had already purchased the Ultrapower magnum wires this past summer and now after finding out from this thread that you still need added heat protection, I decided to use DEI titanium plug wire socks. These socks are rated at 1800* F and are about the same price as the GM metal sheilds. My son and I use these on a turbo charged race car with good results. I'm hoping they work as well on the 8.1
