You should do just fine. So you're not using the metal shields, is that right?

On Taylor wires, both the shields and socks may be used together. I believe that the shields are inexpensive. The 15336959 - Spark Plug Wire Shield are about $9.00 each on the UltraRVProducts site.

The shield also provide a tell-tale sign in regard to the heat. Normally they have an interior wrapper that's orange. When that wrapper turns black, this suggests a high heat condition. One may even observe melting and other deformity with the shield that flags that additional cooling or protection is required.

Had that today leaving the Keys. I could hear drivers side exhaust not sounding right. Returned back to RV Resort for another day, let rig cool off while I went for new wires in jeep. Got back, removed doghouse and saw #7 wire just hanging. Feared the worst like broken spark plug but luckily not the case. Put wire back on plug securely and all is good. Its mystery of how it came off since sometimes there a little difficult to pull off. Got lucky with this one. New wires to return!

Thanks DriVer
A wire(s) are most likely the culprit but keep in mind, the problem could be a spark plug.

No, I did not have the metal sheilds installed. I did have heat socks on the wires that I already had from the race car but they are rated for 1200*. After reading here I decided to change out to the premium socks which are actually rated the same or a little higher than the Ultrapower extreme. The GM metal sheilds were $70 and my cost on these socks is $74. They are a full 8" long and cover the wires well above the exhaust manifold.

The only area of immediate concern and the most frequently observed point of failure is directly in the vicinity of the exhaust manifold.

About overheating of wires; management of the air flow through the cool pack is essential. Make sure the rubber fabric over top of the radiator is blocking the space at the top of the engine. The more air you get through the cool pack the better the engine will cool and thank you for it.

Magnum wires are on sale for $150 and you can get heat shields from RockAuto for less than $3.00 (15336959), 41-101's are also on sale on Amazon.

OK, so I was looking at the two MAGNUM wires sets sold at Ultraproducts.com. The SPW810 and the SPWEX810. The only difference that I can glean from the website is one set is blue and the other is red. Also one set is sleeved from top to bottom with high temperature fiberglass/acrylic socks that will withstand up to 1500º F & 1000º F continuously, whereas the other set has no protection and requires GM factory heat shields. Otherwise they both appear to be the same product.
My question is where is the $125 price difference?

Hey Dale,
Where did you get those Vette wires? I might want to get some for my '14 5.3L Silverado.

Kinda hoping Jon would chime in on this. I can use the socks from my
Taylor wires and the original plug boot heat shields are still in good shape (orange inside) so I guess I don't need the extremes.
