I would to share a article that I found on page 61 in this magazine:

EXTRA OIL TIP:

Owners of Workhouse chassis with GM Vortec engines can add 1.5 quarts of oil capacity simply by changing to a larger oil filter. More oil helps keep the engine cooler, protects it better and also keeps it cleaner longer, as contaminants will be diluted more.

Here are some equivalent numbers for the tow-quart filters:
PF932F = AC DELCO
51794 = WIX
1794 = NAPA

Bill, Just because MH Mag published this article does not make this position gospel.

We have exhausted this conversation over the years however it will still provide for some interesting dialog again!

Again; I go with a 7 Quart capacity using a NAPA Gold 1060.

Engine design for oil flow, pressure and filtering are precise. Any change in the oil filter could modify the oil specs by reducing pressure, flow, etc. The trick is to maintain oil pressure and flow while fitering at the same time. OEM Filters are matched to engine specs. Without the engine manufacture's approval, is experimenting. I wonder why they didn't do this since they too know more oil capcity impoves some criteria. What about the oil pump? Can it handle the extra? There are many things that go into the engineering design specs of oil for any given motor.

The pump pumps the same amount regardless of how much is in the reservoir. Just like your fuel pump and water pump, unless you run out.
Maybe a little bitty motorcycle 1/2 qt oil filter is good enough for GM to put on the huge 496 cu in engine, but to argue that a 1qt or 2 qt is not , at least, as good is just plain ridiculous in my opinion.

I wonder if engineers ever are concerned about costs for a bigger filter and an extra qt of oil for every single one GM made?

All else being equal, a larger oil filter, aside from providing increased total lubrication system capacity, will reduce pressure drops through the oil filter because it has a significantly increased flow area.

When I had a 488 CID V-10 Dodge, it orginally came with and used a 2 qt. Mopar-branded oil filter. After a few years, I went to the Dodge dealer to buy an oil filter only to find out that, in the interest of cost reduction and inventory standardization, Dodge/Mopar had discontinued the 2 qt. filter and gone to the small (3/4 qt. or so) oil filter used on the Dodge 360 CID V-8 as a "factory approved" replacement. Needless to say, I continued to purchase the 2 qt. filter from a quality aftermarket supplier.

Honda has done the same thing with the oil filter for the V-6 engine in my Acura 3.2TL-S. When I go to the Honda dealer for an oil filter today, all they can provide is the tiny filter that was original equipment on the 4-cylinder Honda engines - they say that the tiny filter is "Honda approved" for my application. Again, I use a quality aftermarket filter that has the original 1 quart capacity.

JM2CW....YMMV.

The same 8.1 GM Mercruiser modified engine has a 9 qt engine oil capacity. But of course they realize this engine is not going in a 8000 Lb pick up truck.

Yea... and it only took me maybe a year or so to get to use the 1 qt filter instead of the 1/2 peanut filter supplied by GM.

Dale, It is convienient to just add 7 quarts and be done with it and not have 1/2 of a quart floating around in the storage and yes I know you go for "eight is enough!"

That's actually a very good recommendation and one that would justify the use of the 1/2 qt filter and good dinosaur oil!

just came back from the Winnie GNR where I attended a WH seminar, the WH rep from California way who gave the seminar approved the use of a 1qt or 2qt filter, however cautioned using a Fram [ I can totally agree to that] or to my surprise a Napa filter] The rep was a regional service manager.

In 2008 at the 50th WIT Anniversary, I gave that seminar. I'll not soon forget having been given the opportunity to do so. Right after that ..... our coach got whacked by lightning!

I spend my $$ and buy Amsoil oil and filters, but I never go more than 6K miles or 6 Months. Even at the higher cost of Amsoil, Oil is a cheap investment on a Gas engine, for peace of mind.
The product I use, says 15 K miles or 1 year.

What filter did the WH rep recommend? I used the Napa gold 1060 on my 2000 Brave (454) for 10 years with no issues. I will be doing my first oil change on our new Adventurer with the 8.1 soon and had planned on staying with the Napa but not if WH does not recommend it.
Thanks,
