Drove from Luray Va to Seaford,Va. 416 miles round trip with toad, kept it under 60. Mountains,Hills and Flat Land. ONLY averaged 6.7 MPG. How can I do better other than walk?

When we crossed the Blue Ridge and got into Culpepper Va, we smelled an odor and thought at first it was electrical, but then discovered it was coming from the transmission as it did not want to pull. Stopped checked the Tranny Oil and it was full. Using Transynd no Tranny temp gauge. Waited maybe 15 minutes proceeded slowly and then normally and all was ok. Any ideas why it ran hot. The dual fans did come on a couple of times and wondering if a bypass switch on the fans would force more air through the cooler? Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? Thanks in advance.

I'm sort of wondering how sure you are that the smell was really comming from the transmission. I know that on my W22 (and other RV's I've owned) grease will fly off the U-joints, if recently greased, hitting the hot exhaust pipes. You than get that "hot oil" smell. Or, perhaps your tranny was too full and burped out a little oil. I expect you'll find no damage nor problems.

Joe, when we first pulled over the smell was the strongest. After a few minutes we decided to move on and the coach did not want to move very fast. We went a couple of blocks pulled over again and thats when we did all the fluid checks. I suspect you are right but one of the reasons of over heating is a blocked cooler /lines according to Allisons Web Site...and more fuel consumption. Hate to spend the $'s to get it checked ,but for peace of mind , I think I'll have to do it. Thanks

Joe I just experienced the "hot oil smell" last week. Now that you mention grease, I had just lubed the chassis and I'll bet it was from grease on the exhaust pipes. I had just went through a tunnel, the smell went away a few minuets later. I even blamed traffic in front of me. Thanks for sharring you insight. Marv
