My 8.1 appears to take only 3 qts!

Hi Guys,

I don't usually change my own oil. Getting up there in years, I thought maybe it was time to turn the mechanical stuff over to the younger guys. I took the MH in to get an oil leak fixed. It turned out that they couldn't do it because the oil cooler line set was not available, and that's where the leak was. OK, so I removed the lines, repaired them and re-installed them. (That's a longer story).
When I put in a new 1 qt. Wix filter and put 7 quarts into the engine (after draining all the old oil out), the dipstick showed I was several quarts over the full line. So, I removed 4 quarts and I'm still showing about a quart over full. [Moderator edit], After putting 7 quarts in, I ran the engine about 5 minutes. Yes, the vehicle was elevated in the front when I did this. All my oil level measurements were taken with the engine cold. Looking at the dip stick, the holes in the stick showing the "operating range" are within a couple inches of the end of the stick. That doesn't seem right to me. Neither does 3 quarts of oil capacity. The dipstick shows a number 12557471. I am not the first owner of this MH. Do you guys have any ideas what is going on here?

This reminds me of the story of the guy that goes into the auto parts store asking for a new dipstick because the one he has doesn't reach the oil. I hope I'm not that dumb!

I don't know what to tell you about the oil level, other than my P32 chassis coach takes 7 quarts or there about. As to the oil cooler hoses, Brazel's / Ultra RV products is in the process of getting some of these hoses custom made since the original manufacturer stopped making them earlier this year. Last I saw estimated availability is about 2 months from now.

I don't know what your problem is but don't run it with only 3qts of oil unless you want to have to get a new engine. My advice would be to drain the oil and put in the amount the service manual says. Start the engine on a level ground turn it off and let it set for about an hour then remark your dipstick.

Could you possibly have the trans and engine oil dipsticks reversed. I know sounds silly.....

Workhorse dipsticks are unique to the application. You should be able to get one from an authorized WCC service center or call Jon at Ultra RV Products.

Your 8.1L engine takes 6.5 quarts of oil with the AC PF-454 oil filter. (short) - 7 quarts with a WIX/NAPA Gold 060. (long - 7/8 quart)

Simple recognition is the transmission dipstick is red, the oil is yellow.

I don't think so. The Yellow ring at the top of the dipstick says "Engine Oil".

Yes, my manual says 6.4 quarts with the stock filter. That's pretty close to agreement...close enough. That SHOULD mean that if I replace the 1/2 qt filter with a 1 qt. filter, I should put about 5.4 qts. in the engine, with the assumption that the new 1 qt filter is already full. Agreed?

Have you measured the oil level when the coach is level?

Next time I’m at mine I’ll check your number on the dipstick to mine. Maybe tomorrow Sunday.

Yes, I did. It didn't make much difference. We're talking about six inches on the dipstick over the full mark.

This is a long shot but is there a chance you drained the fluid out of the transmission pan instead of the engine?

I'll bite.
How much oil is in the transmission?
The weird thing is you then removed 4 quarts from where?

See it all the time in the polaris razor forum
Guys pull the wrong drain plug and end up over filling the motor

I just measured my dipstick in my 8.1. It is 57 1/2" long from where the dipstick contacts the top of the filler tube to the end of the dipstick.
The measurement from the end of the dipstick to the line with an arrow pointed at it is 2 1/2".
My dipstick part # is 12557471. The same as yours. I'm typing this as I am sitting in my MH if you need any more info.
