Need help changing filter in my 4 speed transmission.

I have the 4 speed chevy transmission and I am going to change the filter. I would like to know what transmission fluid to use? I would also like to know how many quarts of fluid I would need? Thank You

I looked at the shop manual and it looks like I use DEXRON (R) 111 automatic transmission fluid. I am unable to find how much fluid I add by just taking the pan off? Someone must have done this before, please help.

Is that the Allison 1000 transmission?

Dexron III is no longer certified by GM, and therefore most of what you will find is products claiming to be "compatible" with, or equilivent to, Dexron III. Only the maker knows what the stuff actually is.

The newer ATF that IS certified by GM is known as Dexron VI, or Dex 6. Allison has stated that Dex 6 should NOT be used in their older trannies that previously used Dex 3 because it WILL damage the seals. I don't KNOW if the same thing is true for the older GM trannies (like yours), but I would not use the uncertified Dexron III or the new Dexron VI. Instead I would pay the price and use one of the ATF products that meet Allison TES-295 standard. The best known of those is Castrol TranSynd, but there are several other brands that make a fluid certified by Allison to meet their standards.

Sorry I don't know how much fluid you will need to refill after dropping the pan. I suggest you catch it all and pour into a container (s) to determine how much to put back because you don't want to overfill.

Well if it's a Allison 1000 you don't remove the pan. I have changed mine many times.

Assuming it is a P32 chassis with 8.1L Vortec, it should have a Chevy 4L85E not an Allison 1000

Yes Isaac-1 is right that is the transmission I have. I will try and find a compatible fluid. Thanks all who answered. If any one who reads this and knows how much fluid i need i would be for ever grateful. If not i will try and do what edgray says and try and catch it all. Thank You

GM Manual for 4L80-E trans:
trans fluid capacity
pan removal: 7.3L (7.7 Quarts)
dry: 12.8L (13.5 Quarts)
Fluid: Dexron II in 4L80-E manual, but other sources say Dexron III
following site says you can use Dexron VI now to replace Dexron III:
https://sytyregistry.com/forum/forum...5e-information

I think the capacity is the same for both transmissions.

Also, see this IRV2 post on draining the trans:
http://www.irv2.com/forums/f22/how-t...uid-11933.html
or this GM truck site:
https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/top...exron-6-fluid/

4L80-E trans torque capacity - 440 lb-ft
4L85-E trans torque capacity - 460 lb-ft.
Hope this helps.

Mercon V fluid. That is what many of the trans builders recommend running in the 4L80E trans.
