Hi all -

I'm a current class C owner looking at the possibility of moving into a class A. I've been pounding the web in search of the best deal and came across a "New" 2009 unit (approx. 650 miles on the coach) that has been 'priced to move'.

Before investing too much time into researching this unit, I wanted to see what advice folks have as this unit is built on the Workhorse W22 chassis. I don't have much experience with Workhorse as my current unit is built on a Ford chassis.

I am somewhat skeptical of the unit based on information I've read in this and other forums regarding the current issues/problems.

Thanks and I appreciate any feedback.

A 2009 W22 motorhome if priced right and if you like the floorplan is exactly what I would go with. You will also find that every brand of vehicle out there has had issues as one point or another (up to and including some $950,000 motorhomes that I have known) however once the brake issue is is resolved this year there is little else on the radar screen that paints a dim picture about owning a Workhorse.

The 8.1L engine - excellent motor up to the task of being a prime mover in your RV. The 6-Speed Allison transmission, unparalleled performance and economy. 50° wheel cut - amazing maneuverability. The 4Ch/4Wh ABS brakes themselves - stop on a dime and give you change.

I recommend the W22 to give you a positive ownership experience. There isn't anything that I would recommend any more other than finding a sweetheart of a deal on a UFO.

Hello Steve,
I have a 2007 Allegro Bay on the 06' W22 Chassis and can say that I have had no problems with mine. No brake issues at all, but I use it often which seems to be a big thing with the people that have had brakes problems on this chassis(not using them much). But I am very happy with mine.

Im not sure if the 09 is even on the brake recall and if it is you wouldn't have trouble if any for a few fears and by then the repair would most likely be done. I have an 04 chassis with 27K miles on it and have had no trouble at all. I do change my brake my fluid every two years though. The W22 is a great chassis with the 8.1 and the allison trans it has great power and it drives and rides better than any gas powered MH out there so go for it If you like the floor plan.

Love my W22-WH. Whatever the miles, whatever the build date, negotiate a COMPLETE BRAKE FLUID FLUSH BEFORE IT LEAVES THE LOT. Even if the rig has been setting on a lot for some time.
If it were me I would add a set of TST Tire Pressure monitors right off. Either your cost or theirs.
Good luck, and keep asking questions. It'll be too late after the sale.....

Workhorse chassis RUN AWAY, DON"T WALK. Do a search for the Workhorse brake issue and spend a few hours reading.

buck62, Is that all you got? That issue is going away. What else would you "Run" away from?

I appreciate the responses so far, as it gives me a number of things to consider when negotiate a potential deal. Negotiating...Next to the chassis issues the other big PIA! Can honestly say negotiate is much more painful this time around, than I remember from our last purchase in May '08 (probably another thread for another day!).

I have a 2009 W22 which now has 14000 miles in the rockies with no issues. I do not believe 2009 is even included in the recall. Broad statements like RUN AWAY from Workhorse are very missleading especially from those whom only know what they have read. Proud owner and would not hesitate to purchase another. This is our second Workhorse chassis.

DO YOUR RESEARCH, take your time. There is plenty of inventory out there. Negotians are tough right now, with this economy the dealers have to squeeze as much as they can out of each sale. A lot of good private sales out there if you are willing to go that route.

We have owned our 2003 Winnebago on a W22 for over 5 years. We now have over 50,000 miles on it. I am very happy with it and If I could afford to I would buy another W** before the 8.1 can't be found new anymore.

If you're referring to the brake calipers, I'm thinking that the Bosch culprits were discontinued in late 2007 or 2008. Also if you're willing to look around some more for a W24 chassis. They don't have the Bosch and never had this issue to begin with as far as I know. At any rate, I'd be taking advantage of getting my hands on that six speed Allison and especially the 8.1 big block chevy while you still can in a coach that new.
I have nothing against the Ford either, but feel that is just doesn't quite measure up to the Workhorse at this time. The biggest advantage in having a Ford, like with my Chevy is the amount and frequency of truck dealerships that serve them. Even at that, I only go to a dealer when it's wise to do so and did it in TX a couple of years ago while traveling through. I couldn't do it myself and if the repairs failed somewhere down the road on my way west and beyond, I could always pull into another chevy truck dealer with the work receipt.
