When I am driving on level ground with speed control on my transmission sounds like it is shifting up and down. Sounds like it is down shifting. When I get to an overpass it really digs down. and smooths out before it get to the top of the rise. Since I am new to this this has not been my experience with other transmissions. I have a 2003 Holiday Rambler on workhorse chassis. Please help

Sounds normal for cruise control.Click C/C off for grades or over pass.C/C is only for level road.My M/H does the same as your's.

Welcome to iRV2.com!
You should be able to SEE the RPMs changing IF it is the tranny you are "hearing". On flat ground and constant speed, the tranny should not be shifting very often, if at all. Next time out, observe the tach to watch for an RPM change accompaning the sound, 'cause I'm thinking you MAY be hearing the fan clutch engaging the large fan behind your radiator to cool the engine when it begins to heat up. Ed grey hit my guess on the nose... if RPM's are stable you are hearing the viscous clutch engage and start the cooling fan due to engine workload going uphill.
Watch the tachometer and let us know.

Have you changed your transmission fluid .... ever? Please know that this is something that you may want to consider.
I spoke to an Allison service person here and they said that a Transynd equipped vehicle needs to be drained and refilled every 150,000 miles OR 4,000 Hours OR 48 months! WCF. I'm slightly overdue!
I just bought 3 gallons of Transynd and I will be changing my fluid (10.6 qts approx) when I return home. I got 3 gallons for $109.77 at the FMCA Rally - includes tax, license and registration.
If you have Dexron your change interval will be much sooner.

I have a 2003 hr vacationer with same tranny and notice the sound of fan also seems to down and up shift a lot. Is there a way to change the transmission shift points. Noticed it does it more in hot weather around 60 to 70 MPH. Unit has 24 k miles and a new tranny was put in 2005

Call Jon Brazel at Brazels RV Performance and he will explain to you what the options are.

Am I seeing this right?
If so I sure changed mine too early at 50,000 miles.
How did you get up to 150,00 so quick

Do these tranny's come stock with this fluid? If not, I have NO idea what is in mine. Any way to tell? Color or ??? I only have 8000 miles on my "new" rig. But, it's 24 mos beyond the 48 you mentioned.
BTW, according to DriVer, I have the W24 chassis. I think that's what you told me.

I suspect you having an 06 you would have the Transyd. You can go to the Allison forum and ask Tom Johnson he was a former Allison Transmission Engineer. I'm sure he can answer any question you may have. This was intended for "Greatwhite".

You should have TranSynd however, Allison ships the transmission dry. The torque converter had TranSynd when it was shipped as Allison tests every unit however, the sump is shipped dry. Therefore it is the RV manufacturer who decided if the sump was filled with TranSynd. There should be a tag on or near the dipstick but again perhaps i'm giving the manufacturers too much credit. I do not think you can tell by color or smell so if in doubt change it (two times).

GreatWhite, Your 2006 transmission IS filled with Transynd IF your build date is after (>=) 4/06/05 OR if the 10th digit of your VIN# is a 6 or better.
Beginning April 6, 2005 the fluid in all Allison TM transmissions changed to TranSyndTM ATF. Regardless on fluid type, AllisonTM recommends replacing the spin on filter only (fluid change is not required) after the first 5,000 miles of operation, AllisonTM/Workhorse part no. 29539579. The AllisonTM recommended service interval with Dexron® III is to change the fluid and spin-on filter is every 25,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. AllisonTM transmissions with the synthetic fluid ATF TranSynd TM have a service interval of 4 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Allison says when using Transynd the fluid needs to be changed at 150,000 miles OR 4,000 Hrs OR 48 months which ever comes first.

Ron, I got 93,000+ miles right now and I know I changed my fluid in 2006 the last time so I'm about 12 months overdue. I'll fix that as soon as we get home.
