Has anybody ever thought about putting a nitrous oxide system on a motorhome just to give it a little more boost going up a hill? I know this will raise a lot of questions. Extra stress on the engine and drivetrain, the engine heating up and will it still pass smog on inspection.I dont know alot about nitrous systems, their not to expensive, once again im not talking about making a rocket ship out of your motorhome just to make it go up the grades a little better.

Don't do it! Just take your time, what's the hurry?

You got me thinking that a 150 HP nitrous boost for the 8% grades might be cool. Surely someone has tried this.

Try it on a rv that you don't love or have big bucks.

Your bottle would be empty on the first hill.

I have very little knowledge about nitrous systems. If you could meter a small amount just to give you a few extra HP to go up a grade how long will your bottle last. It's not that where in a hurry may be you could climb the grade in a higher gear and keep you RPMs down.

I might talk to a shop that specializes in nitrous systems, in fact going to the manufactures would probably be best. NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems) was the best one to deal with back when I tuned nitrous cars.
My experience is with race cars. Nitrous can be very hard on parts if the engine isn't built for nitrous. Ignition upgrades, lower compression than normal, high octane gas are really just starters. Unless you ran a port fogger system instead of a plate system then you'll probably have mixture issues which will have lean/rich cylinders. Rich isn't an issue but lean will destroy the engine. Port systems are much more expensive and complicated than plate systems.
Finally I have no clue what will happen if you run the system more than 15 seconds or so.
I'd try to search out other methods, nitrous is too unreliable for extended use, IMHO.

I would agree with this assessment. The 8.1L engine in my opinion does very well going uphills and the addition of a Nitrous fuel system on the 8.1L isn't a good idea long term. There are much better solutions that are currently being used that have much higher returns on investment other than using a Nitrous system.

Thinking on it if you're serious about that kind of power level I might go with an add on supercharger. I've had good results with these guys, GM 8.1 Supercharger Kit
I assumed you have a workhorse with the GM 8.1.
**Disclaimer** I'm only showing you an option that I feel would be better than NO2. I prefer supercharging over NO2 mainly for the fact it works consistantly, not on or off like NO2. You control how much power is made with the throttle, not "An extra 100HP or nothing." like NO2. I'm leaving it up to you to decide if this is the route for you.

NOT a good idea for the RV application, but for the creative idea.
Run premium unleaded gasoline and let us custom tune it and we'll get you over 100 more HP easy....or 60-80 HP on regular.

A friend of mine put NOX on his 390 Ford P/U camper. He used $30 worth of NoX just pulling Cajon Pass on his 1st trip leaving LA. Not very cost effective, to say the least.

Put the nitrous injector inside the motorhome, let it excape slowly, breathe deeply and enjoy the ride.
You will feel a lot better, and your engine will last one H--L of a lot longer.

Mr Brazel what kind of custom tune do you do to get the extra HP out of the 8.1? I was always told its more about torque than HP for climbing hills.
