After returning from our Alaska trip, I reported that the engine sounded to be missing and that I did not have the power that I should have as well as black soot appearing at the tail pipes. I was advised to change the spark plugs and wires. Well, I didn't change the wires because my Taylor wires with heat boots were only 18 months old, but I did install new AC Delco 41-993's, the hotter running plug. I also changed the very dirty air filter and cleaned the mass air sensor.
Just returned from a little 30 mile trip up and down the hills near our home and boy, what a difference the new plugs made. My W-20 had normal power, good acceleration and no missing. No black soot either. When I removed the old plugs, they were not in good shape. Worse than those that Oemy documented with his tech tips. No way they last 100K miles!.
When we went to Alaska, I changed the air filter while we were in Seward. It was a little dirty. On the way home we had a lot of dust coming down the Alcan and a lot of heavy rain after getting off the Alaska ferry in Prince Rupert and all thru British Columbia. The air filter that I removed yesterday was the dirtiest that I have ever seen. It had a lot of dirt from the dust, but examination showed that too much water either contaminated it thru the tuba or from splashing up from the very wet roads. As soon as the cash is available, I am going to order a cold air kit. It has to be better than the stock filter, especially considering the location. Besides, changing the filter and cleaning the MAS is a pain in the neck...or knees... at its present location near the RF wheel. Anyway, we're real happy that the rig is running well!
