Odd tire wear

My right front is wearing oddly. The outside rib is way worn and the middle rib is scalloped.

Outside wear is usually alignment. Scalloping is usually shocks. The shocks are Koni and show no leaks. Everything is the front suspension is tight.

I am pretty sure that I need an alignment.

Is there another explanation for scalloping?

I would try alignment and balancing. Have you had an all wheel alignment done?

I am clear that I need an alignment (see above).

My concern is that there is some other issue causing the scalloping that will ruin the new tire that I am about to have installed.

Well check your shocks. Scalloping can be caused by out of balance issues to. I would hve them check the weal bearings two.

bruceh, Four years ago I had exact symptoms and equipment as your post now shows. My tires were Michelins, second set for this rig then with 20k miles on the tires. I swapped the two fronts with the driver side rears. Then had the front end alignment checked. The tech wanted to know why I was concerned since he found every thing to spec except the tire pressure was lower then he thought it should be because inner ribs seemed less worn. He also commented on the Saf-T- Plus as to the tie rod clamp bolts not tight enough.

I was running about 88-90 psi in the fronts. So I increased to 95 to 100. Ride was a little harder.

Now, with an additional 18k miles, I see no odd tire wear. Edges are almost as square as the rears.

Odd tire wear reply

First, I have been a member of this site for over ten years as Jim, Aerbus, 2003,W22, but lost my sign in and had to create new account. PITA. Anyway wanted to respond to tire wear. I hesitated to say anything before about koni shocks for fear of starting a "FIRE STORM" but I too have had real problems with them. Four thousand miles on new Konis and same problem as noted in the first post Cupping in center of tires, and everything else.. Took pictures and every tire dealer I showed them to said "You have bad shocks" 4 thousand 200 miles and the shocks are bad .. New tires and new Bilstein shocks. And before we get into that, there is NOTHING wrong with the front end alignment. About every third or forth pad(?) right in the center was worn down and then skip about two or three and flat spot again. Excessive wear on both inside and outside ribs of the tires... Had Bilsteins on with 95 Lbs of air for years with no problems. Just Sayin'
