Oil bath wheel bearings

We had our Bounder in for some service work last week and the shop does a "safety inspection" on all units they work on. Ours is a 2007 W22 chassis and they reported that we should "repack the front wheel bearings". When I said that they were oil bath bearings the service writer said that the oil should be replaced at least every other year, and their records do not show them being changed at all. I told him that I'd do it later. We had the rear axle rebuilt last year after flood water got into the pumpkin and I had that shop inspect the front wheels at that time - they reported no problems then so I don't think I have an issue.

My question: how often, if at all, should the oil in the front hubs be changed?

Don't believe there is a recommended schedule for replacing the lube on a Workhorse chassis. If the oil is contaminated with water, looks like coffee with cream, it needs some attention. Otherwise make sure the lube is at the proper level and drive it.

No leaks and clean oil, you will be good for 100,000 miles plus. No problem.
40 years as a truck mechanic taught me a couple things. Those rigs will easily go 2-300,000 miles without a front hub oil change.

Happy Glamping.

I check mine a couple of times a year. When I do, I use a flashlight and you can easily see the oil looks like the day it went in. If it doesn't, it might indicate other issues (water intrusion, part failing, etc.).

Thanks everyone - I'll continue to monitor the hubs as part of my regular inspections, and let the shop get $300 from someone else!

I would be looking for a service center that has the proper knowledge, from your conversation yours does not. Unfortunately the Bay Area may be a waste land when it comes to RV service, possibly a member can recommend a competent center. If you were in SoCal, Redlands Truck & TV is one shop that fits the bill.

Yeah, normally the service place does a great job. If I bring the RV in with a specific issue they take care of it. Just recently they instituted a policy of doing a free "complete safety inspection" as part of their service, and it seems they like finding things to mention. They've told me that we need new house batteries because the ones we had were dry, and bulging - the thing is I had replaced the batteries about 2 months earlier, and had checked the water level the previous weekend! Their workers do a good job generally, their prices are competitive, and they can generally get us in and out quickly, so I just listen to their recommendations and then verify their findings myself - most of what they recommend are things that I can do myself anyway!
