I have a 1990 Georgie Boy motorhome with a Chevy P30 5.7l engine.

What oil should I use, how many quarts does it hold? It has a Fram PH5 filter on it.

thank you.

I made a mistake. It's a 7.4l 454cid V8 engine.

I used to own a p30 7.4,and I think it was 7 quarts with filter.I would go with 6 and check dipstick.I always used Mobil 1.

Thanks. Do you remember what oil viscosity you used for the Chevy 7.4l V8?

On my last motorhome, I used Shell Rotella 15W40, but it was a diesel engine and that's what everyone recommended.

The manual for my 96 454 said to use 10 W 30 oil . As I recall it held 6 quarts. The Delco oil filter number is PF 454.

My 1990 Chevy manual says 6 qts 10w30, 7 with filter.

That's with the standard size filter.

I think that if you have some good chevrolet repair questions there, then some good oil change recommendations should be given to you. In that way, you would be able to really see the good sides of every part or changes that you would be doing, and at the same time, to see what suits your needs.

The engine oil is the coolant for the bearings of the engine. THe engine coolant only cools the heads, intake, and top half of the block. coolant does almost nothing for the crank, rods and bearings. If you really want to see an oil temp climb almost out of sight run a engine a couple of quarts low it will scare you to death. That being said there is a 2 quart filter you can use, and yes I absolutly would use one IF you have the ground clearence for it. (I also wouldn't use a fram if they given away and deliverd to my home for free.)
Also 15W/40 is very good warmer weather oil. Many of the diesel oils have additives that are no longer in gas oils(ones that used to be).

That would be a good and nice thing to read. A good info indeed in order to really make things work out. Hope that all of us would learn in this one.

In regard to oil changes stick with the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) specifications. The oil viscosity is typically stamped or printed on the fill cap.

The use of 15W-40 is NOT recommended for use in the GM 8.1L Vortec engine that we use in our motorhomes. The OE load is 5W-30 however if you never experience temperatures below 0°F, the use of 10W-30 is the acceptable option. In the geographical area where our RV is parked, I run 10W-30 all year.
