Has anyone noticed an increase in oil consumption after changing to Mobil 1?
Thanks,
Ron

No. I haven't had a problem with oil consumption. So far, over the past 28,000 miles I have not needed to add oil between oil changes.
I understand there are others who do use quite a bit of oil.

I changed mine from dino to Mobil 1 5w-30 at 5,000 miles, and no oil consumption increase.
What DID occur was:
1. Better MPG
2. Cooler engine
3. Less wear at cold starts
Workhorse does state that a quart burned every 1,000 miles is acceptable. If yours uses oil now, it will with synthetic....and has nothing to do with dino/synthetic.

I did notice an increase in oil consumption as well as valve rattle was much louder and lasted much longer. I switched back to Castrol conventional oil and valve rattle was greatly reduced and oil consumption went back down to almost nothing.

I switched to Mobil 1 10W30 at 25000. I have had no increase in oil consumption. I use a qt to 2000 miles.

My response mirrors Petros.
I have found oil consumption with either type of oils to be strongly a function of how hard the engine is worked. In either type I rarely get to 3000 miles before I am down almost a quart or more. At times of hard driving, wind hills etc, I may use a quart in 1500 miles. At 49000, consumption is about constant to the above statemnts.

I have 28000 plus miles, and I only added 1 quart during that time-. I use Amsoil synthetic. The 1 quart I used, was on a big trip in the Rockies, at around 10000 mile, before switching to synthetic at 14000.

Oil consumption on a properly built engine than is broken in correctly should be almost 0. The only reason to use oil is if you are running really hard such as mountain driving or if your getting blow by.
Same goes for startup knock or piston slap.....

What is considered "Normal" is 1 qt. per 100 gallons of fuel burned. I do not use anywhere near that amount of oil so I can't complain. I did use ~1/2 quart at about the 1,500 mile mark.
I am currently running NAPA synthetic motor oil and a NAPA 1060 Gold oil filter.

While I respect your opinion, this comment would seem imply that those with engines that use oil didn't properly brake in their engines.
I'm not sure that's the case. I suspect that some of us got engines that are built to better tolerances than others, due to luck of the draw.

Looks like this oil consumption is going to be all over the map
If I used a quart per every 800 miles I would say that was excessive
I was using about a quart between a 3000 mile oil change in the flat lands of Florida but now I'm using about a quart every 1500 miles since I changed to Mobil 1.
Maybe I could go back to Dino and see if there is any difference
Last year on a 7000 mile vacation with the engine working pretty hard I used only 3 quarts of oil.

Photog,
Your talking about build tolerances and not break in procedure. I speaking of a standard cast iron block engine. No liners, chrome parts, no aluminum etc.
When we built our stock car race engines we dropped then into the car and ran them at 2500 rpms for about 20 mins to break in a new cam and rings. Then we changed oil & filter and headed for the track.
Not the same on a car or motorhome. The rig should be basically broke in at time of delivery assuming you didn't do a factory pickup. It seems to me that the 8.1 does not really come into its own until about 20,000 miles. I used a little oil prior to that mileage. But, never 1 qt to a 1,000.

For what it's worth.
When I called Workhorse customer service to inquire about switching to a synthetic oil they said that if I did switch, not to go back to conventional oil.
He said that once the engine had been using synthetic "it wouldn't like going back to dino oil". He didn't explain any further and I didn't press him.
