I drained my oil yesterday (2005 Workhorse 22) and was going to change the filter today. I inadvertently replaced the oil, but have not started the engine yet. Can I still change the filter without the new oil draining out?

I would say yes as the new oil has not been circulated or pumped into oil filter yet.

Is the oil filter boss above the pan level?

I know you can change the Allison spin-on filter and only lose a few drops, but I never pulled an oil filter with a full pan.

Interesting to know what happens..

Just start to unscrew the filter slowley and see what happens. You should expect a little oil to leak out. If you get a big gusher of oil, screw it back on.

Bob Keech.

Hook up a shop vac to your oil-filler tube and run it. This will keep your oil in suspension and not drain out.
You can even pull the drain plug and change the gasket if you find it leaking after an oil change.

Good Luck.

Henry.

Thanks to everyone!
The oil filter boss appears to near the top of the oil pan.
When I removed the old filter, I got about the same amount of dirty black oil running down the side of the old filter that I would durning a normal oil change. No clean new oil at all appeared
