oil filters
Can anyone give me the capacities of these NAPN oil filters #1748 and #7398. Called NAPA and they don't know! I think the 1748 is 2 qt, but not sure. Thanks

Just bought a AC Delco PF454 from the Chevrolet dealer today and inquired about the larger filter. They have them but said it's not necessary.
The PF454 was $7.50 and holds about a half quart at the most.
I put in 7 quarts on the change with a new filter.

oil filters
The last two quart filter I had from NAPA was #1794. A local oil analysis firm told me their opinion was a larger filter wasn't necessary to I went back to the Fram PH8873.

I believe the 1748 is for diesel motor and the 7398 is for a Onan generator.
The 1 qt filter is PF1218 or Napa 1060 and the 2 qt is PF932 or Napa 1794.
IMHO - the PF454 is to small for a 8.1L... minimum should be PF1218
If you look at most fleet applications you will find the 2 qt filter is used on everything from a 350ci and up.
Ask yourself why are their so many different filters if the small 1/2 qt is all that is needed. IMHO - cost and fitment.

I moved from the 1qt to NAPA 2 qt. first, I like the thought someone commented on how that would help lower engine oil temps, always a good thing. Secondly, I use Mobil 1 synthetic, and I have extended my oil change interval from 2,000 miles to 5,000 miles. I think the larger filter will function better over the extended change interval. I am acquainted with a guy who is a fueler drag racer, he only uses the 2 qt.

One more bit of advice, if you decide to use the 2 qt., when you change the oil, pour fresh oil into the filter BEFORE you screw it on. It takes the oil pump longer to circulate new oil on start up to fill the filter, leaving the engine waiting for lubrication while the big filter fills.

Thanks for all the info. One question is how far does the 2 Qt filter stick down past the oil pan? Don't want to have the filter hanging down pass everything. I do always fill the filter before I install it.

No problem... I run them and even ran them on my Corvette with a small block.

Just curious but how often should the oil in the 8.1 be changed on a road trip. We're doing a 4000 to 5000 mile winter trip with all highway miles. RV parks and state parks don't allow oil changes and it's not easy to find places that'll do motorhome oil changes as drive ups. Modern oils aren't like oils of old and auto manufacturers recommend 5000 mile changes now. It's my understanding that short trips are what produce byproducts that harm engines and long trips burn them off. I'm thinking that 4000 to 5000 miles of long over the road miles is fine between changes.

I would have no concerns at 5000 miles, I do use Mobil 1.
