Just completed the first oil change at 3000 miles. When I "hefted" the AC/Delco PH454 filter off the store rack I thought, "Wow, feels like a soup can stuffed with newspaper!" (It was also the cheapest in the store.) After much thought, I ended up getting a NAPA Gold. You can't go wrong, warranty wise, going with the manufacturers recommendations, no matter how "cheap" the part may be. On the other hand, a soup can filled with newspaper probably would get the engine through its 3/36,000 warranty period the manufacturer is shooting for. Doing a search on this forum shows peoples filter choice all over the place. I have always bought high quality/high filtration filters (thus my 300,000 mile SAAB with original turbocharger and no internal engine work.) BUT, I am reminded of a conversation I had with one of the WCC guys about what I thought was low oil pressure (a concern expressed elsewhere on this forum). He stated, and as subsequently added to the WCC website, that the 8.1L engine is a "high volume/low pressure" system. My concern, then, would a dense filtering media inhibit the high FLOW of oil through the filter resulting in some problem downstream. At least one contributor to this forum reported a similar problem.

Secondly, when I changed the oil, the oil life monitor said there was 66% oil life remaining. The GM website goes to considerable length touting their oil life monitoring system and strongly advocates using it as the basis for determining oil change requirements. Will GM/Workhorse back a warranty claim due to a lubrication related failure, if the monitoring system is used to determine oil change intervals?

Napa Gold is what my local over the road truck garage used last time I have my oil changed. Napa Gold filters are made by Wix and Wix are very good filters. AC's are also very good filters.

If dense filter media inhibits oil flow the filter's bypass valve will open and some oil will bypass the filter media.

I would assume that if it is listed for use on the 8.1L it should be OK.

I tend not to mind the oil life monitor and simply change my oil on a regularly scheduled routine that works for me.
