oil viscosity

have 2010 8.1 L GM motor and wonder whether to use 10W30 or 5W30 Mobil 1.

Live in IL. but hardly ever drive in weather below zero. Motor Home is garaged

Take to FLA 3 months in winter. Thanks

is there an operator manual? A lot of times it will have the type of oil imprinted on the oil filler cap

As Ultra RV Tech said....5W30 is what the manual suggests.

I run 10W30 Mobile 1 Extended in the summer...100 degree weather here most of the summer.

5W30 Mobile 1 Extended in the winter although it seldom gets below freezing here.

Yup, and I go with what GM recommends for the engine.

Depends on the outside temperatures where you will be operating the motorhome. From the temps you stated, I would prefer 10W/30 for the Mobil 1 you have chosen to use.

If using Mobil-1, I prefer the high mileage version because it is higher in the 30W viscosity range at 100 degrees C.

With the tight tolerances in today's engines, use what the manufacturer recommends or you could be lacking lucubration in certain situations.

Yep, running higher viscosity oils than the recommended can wipe a bearing. The tolerances in engines today just don't need it.

Use whatever you think best. What would the guy who designed and built the engine know anyway.

The number before the W is the equivalent viscosity at 0 degrees C -- at engine operating temperature both oils have the same viscosity rating of 30.

The designer of the engine just specifies the oil with the widest temperature operating range..... If your climate never sees extreme cold, there is nothing wrong with using a 10W-30 vs a 5W-30

Yes 10W-30 is okay if you don't see extreme cold temps. How cold will it be when he leaves Il this winter for Fl? Hard to say. Same for me when I leave Mi for Fl, I don't know what the temps will be. Since 5W-30 has me covered no matter what the temp it just makes sense to run it all the time.

Send a message via AIM to Oemtech
I have been running 10w30 for 11 years here in Texas. No issues.
