Today I went to Walmart and bought the "geriatric" Mobil1 synthetic for engines with over 75,000 miles. I expect it will work just fine. I've just turned over 78,000 miles.

Worst case is that I don't expect it'll hurt anything.

Before we went to Wally's we stopped at NAPA and bought a Gold #1060 for about ~$4.50.

I was thinking about going to Advance and buying an M1 oil filter matching the 1060 dimension since they are made by Champ Labs but I'll stick with the 1060 for now.

I added 7 quarts. 1 - 5 quart jug and 2 quarts. Man that 5 quart jug is difficult to work with under the hood. It'd be great if I had a battery powered pump! I have not found the funnel that I am happy using on this vehicle. The M1 was ~$1 less /QT at Wally's than NAPA, $6.37 and the 5 Quart was $24.50. I also used the premium Wally grease for about $3.22 a tube. (Red in color)

About the grease, the next time I will use it, 6 months from now, it'll begin to liquefy - SO (I'm thinking) I'm going to unload my grease gun and dump the rest of the tube. $3.22 for a DIY grease job isn't that much of a burden. PLUS I won't have to deal with all that grease dipping out everywhere.

Mike,

I made my own funnel from a Mobil 1 can like the one in your picture. Lay the can on it's edge with the opening down and cut along the length about thru the "M" in Mobil. That leaves a long narrow funnel. I then sanded the threads nearly smooth so they fit tightly in the engine oil tube. It works great and stores very nicely beside the vertical shaft for the brakes. It's ridden there for 30,000+ miles. It's cheap too.....you know me.

Good post Dave...........you took the words right out of my mouth, although I leave a little more length, I just cut the bottom off which makes it a little easier pouring oil in @ a little faster pace, that is if you have room for it, which I do on my 460 engine. Good luck and follow the yellow brick road safely.

I use a multi-use transfer pump (Harbor Freight # 66418) to add Mobile One from both the 5 quart and the I quart bottles. It sucks every drop. I also use one (a news one each time) to change the break fluid.

I like the idea about using a pump. Transferring the oil from the 5 gallon to several one quart bottles is a pain in the patoot!

I use the high millage Mobile 1 in the toad, but use (when I can find a
Walmart that carries it) the Truck and SUV blend

I use a hand pump for kerosene heaters for transferring oil from a gallon or 5 quart oil container. I also keep a separate pump for tranferring antinfreeze. My gas pusher has little room for tilting a large container for either issue. I got mine at lowes or homedepot but here is a link to ACE hardware. American Wick® Hand Operated Siphon Pump (SI-60) - Kerosene Heater Accessories - Ace Hardware

Thats OK DriVer, transposing a few numbers every now and again is just a normal sign of ageing. I know, I do it all the time.

87,400 miles, that's pretty good for the 8.1 pulling a heavy load, you must take good care of it. Is there any one else on IRV who has more miles than that, on their 8.1 , or even, let's include the Ford V-10 too ?

I had 98,643 on my 2003 W-22 when I sold it. It was running as good as it ever did, maybe better. Still using the 1/2 QT of oil every 1,500 miles. OEMY changed the OE spark plugs at 70K. I changed the fuel filter twice. Ed

I have used Mobil 1 full synthetic oils for many years in all my vehicles including my motorhome. I am getting more and more confused with all the varieties of Mobil oils available (Mobil 1, Extended Performance, High Mileage, 1 High Mileage, Clean High Mileage, Clean 5000, Advanced Fuel Economy, Truck and SUV, Clean 75000, ESP Formula, ECT).

DriVer, One thing I did notice, the Workhorse Chassis Guide states under Oil Quality, “For gasoline engines, recommended oils for your vehicle can be identified by the API “Starburst” certified symbol on the front of the oil container.” Mobil 1 High Mileage does Not have the API Starburst as some of the other Mobil 1 formulas do.

Well; it did good on the only trip I took it on so far. 400 miles RT straight down and back on I-25, relatively flat road for CO. I'm tentatively planning a trip across the mtns in Dec if I can thread the needle for good weather.
The scary part is, the new engine ran fine, just like my old engine did, right up until it gave up the ghost. I still think a valve dropped ,(is that possible ?) starting the process of destroying the engine.

It makes you wonder what the difference in all the specialized , hi mileage, hi reving , 4 cylinder, etc oils. I know in motorcycles, they all say not to use "energy conserving" oils such as 5W or even 10W oils.
