I have a 2001 Damon Challenger / 2000 workhorse chassis I drive down the highway and when it strains on hills I drop out of overdrive and it doesn't come back until I totally turn off the MH ignition. Something resets within seconds and I can go down the road for awhile longer when it happens again. Anybody have this problem and know the solution? The workhorse shop seems stumped.Thank you!

Before you start throwing parts at it have it checked for trouble codes. I would think that the Workhorse shop would have done this. This will be money well spent. There may be a code or a pending code that will lead you in the right direction. I have seen stored codes even when there is no check engine or transmission lights illuminated. The input, turbine and output sensors are all the same part on Allison 1000 and 2000 series Transmissions and very rarely fail, usually if there is a sensor code it is a bad connection rather than a bad sensor. The input sensor is in the bell housing, the turbine sensor is in the center top left, and the output is on the rear left of the transmission. I am a retired mechanic and if it were mine I would have my scanner connected while driving in order to watch the sensor readings, trans. temp. and other relevant data.
Please let us know what this winds up being caused by.

sebob: You are getting some good advice here, but I'm thinking you may have a GM 4 speed tranny. If so, any good transmission shop should be able to fix the problem. If indeed you have an Allison 1000 5 speed, them go to an Allison approved shop-ONLY. Please let us hear what you learn is thye problem. Thanks,Ed

Like Ed suggested you may have a GM 4Speed. Try a Chevrolet dealer that works on motorhomes! Best of both worlds!

Thanks to everyone. I found a service shop, but have been very disappointed in the work. I left the RV running so they could get a read of the problem. It came back a transmission slip type code. The shop determined by consenous that it was the torc converter. . And yes it is a GM 4 speed transmission. I took the RV out for shake-down and the new transmission is slipping and the new brakes are screaming. A shoddy job at best! Am very disappointed and will return coach back to the shop. I cannot recommend OConnor of Portland for repairs.....

Hi All! Sorry it has taken so long to respond here. The workhorse shop I found was OConnor of Portland Maine. After ignoring my request not to put in a new trans mission which was not the answer. They did it anyways at a cost of $3600. The actual solution showed itself 2 days later when my accelerater peddle stopped responding. The switch controlling it had finally burnt out. THAT was the problem from the start. $36 switch solved everything. I checked with a shop I'd had replace some trans hoses as to the burnt trans and we agreed it WASN'T! So beware and if you have a similar problem with over drive, try changing your gas pedal speed sensor! Thanks Everyone!

You didn't explain what your original issue was regarding the brakes. I also can't figure out why a shop would install a new transmission without the owner's authorization. I've had excellent service from O'Connor for years and they always ask my permission for any work that is beyond the agreed upon scope. Maybe it was just one of those days. Best of luck.

Common issue. I have heard many times of trans shops replacing the tranny and oh we threw in a new throttle position sensor/gas pedal sensor etc. Guess what the real problem was! On my 89 jeep over twenty years of ownership I had a tranny problem a few times and it was always the tps or the connection. Example daughter driving back to college in mountains and calls me while driving and says the jeep would not keep speed up going up a hill. I told her to manually down shift the auto to 3rd gear and things worked and she basically had to manually shift auto trans gears to get there. She took it to jeep dealer and I called them and said strongly suspect tps and they tested it and changed it and all was good. Lesson is to check the sensors and wiring first.
