P-32 8.1 spark plug & wires recommendations

Hello All –

Thinking I may need to change out plugs and wires on this soon to be 17 YO Coach with 26K on it. I’ve looked around and there are several different recommendations for plugs and wires. Some running hotter than others and wires that withstand higher temps. This seems confusing to me at times. So trying to stop my confusion, if you have changed out yours can you weigh in on the plug & wires by brand you used? Omey's site didn't have any info. Assuming I found the correct OEM AC plug of 41-101, I did find this info: AC DELCO 41-101 - Cross Reference | sparkplug-crossreference.com

Also, is this a straight forward change out through the doghouse? I read an earlier post where someone stated it was easier to access the plugs from below.

Thanks

I have a 2003 Southwind with the 8.1. After burning the two set of wires I put in ceramic high temp wires from Summit Racing. Not another problem in 20,000 miles. I changed the plugs and wires from underneath. Turn the wheel and sit on the ground. On hour tops. Good Luck.

8.1 plugs and wires

I have a 2004 8.1 with 24,000mi. When I bought it last year, it ran OK, but not
“great”. I noticed a lot of surging when climbing grades. I read all I could on this forum, and decided plugs, wires, and MAF were all suspect. I ordered “UltraPower 8.1L Extreme Magnum Spark Plug Wires”, Iridium plugs, and a new MAF from UltraRV Products. I installed all of the parts from the front wheel wells after removing the wheels and some splash shields. Not hard if you have the tools. Be sure to use good supports when the wheels are off the ground! I don’t think these parts can be installed from the top, but I think it would be a lot harder. The coach now runs like a top- smooth, no surging and more power on upgrades. I’m a happy camper. The plug wires are not cheap, but given the heat problems on the 8.1’s in RV’s, I felt they were worth the cost.

The doghouse on ours comes out easily and when it's removed, gives me plenty of room to change out the wires and plugs. Might be different on other motorhomes but I never even thought about coming up from underneath.

Ours was one of those rigs that had the ongoing burning of the spark plug wire(s) problem. First set of Taylor high temp wires didn't last very long. My 2nd changeout was to the Ultra Magnums and they've hung in there just fine.

Taylor Extreme service series (99615) and ac 41-101 gapped @ .45 Do not use any anti-seize on plug threads. I lifted the coach with the levelers and supported the frame with stands. You'll have plenty of room from the outside wheel wells.

I used O.E. AC Delco plugs and Belden Edge plug wires part # 700216. Two years later no problems with either. Wires have a lifetime warranty and fit perfectly with the original heat shields. Did all the work from the top through the doghouse.

I used a hi quality / temp ceramic racing set of wires.
Forget the brand or website?
This is one area where it doesn't pay to try to save $. Buy the best you can find.

I installed NAPA Beldin Edge wires (700905) along with cut to fit heat shielding (1200F) sleeves over the wires (all 8) and I'm 12K+ miles and no issues. Bought the heat shield sleeve in 1 yard lengths from Summit racing.

When you wrap the wire be sure and wrap it as close to the plug end as you can get. Make them long enough that the heat wrap will end up at roughly valve cover height.

my OEM wires lasted about 32000 miles before burning out.
Replaced with Taylor Extreme Wires which lasted about 2500 miles. Returned under warranty for Taylor Extreme with Ceramic Boots. Those lasted about 2500 miles also.
Just installed OEM wires with new heat shields and high temp wire boots from Del City. Also installed ac delco 41-101 plugs gapped to .045.
Then to increase airflow over the manifolds, I have installed two bilge fans to move the air. Currently working on enclosing the engine compartment and installing plenum to better direct the airflow from the bilge fans.
This should also help to keep the hot engine air from penetrating the doghouse and heating up the passenger compartment.
A lot of folks speak highly of the Ultra Magnums, but they are expensive.

Do a search on this forum and you will find enough information to last you several days of reading.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I just replaced a set of Taylor Extremes that lasted less than 7,000 miles with a set of Magnum Ultras Extremes, I hope I am now done with this issue.
