bert1938, A check engine light is typically related to emission controls. I don't expect any permanent damage resulting from the CEL.

As soon as practical have your engine scanned by a Tech II instrument at a service center. They should be able to identify the problem. Now that said, the CEL may even clear itself before you get to the service center if it's a transient problem.

last info I got was a burnt wire in a harness some were, now try to get a wire diagram so as to know what wires to look at. Any help would be a god send because the way it is running now I'm not going to try to drive the 50 miles to a service center. not enough power to pull itself out of it's own tracks

Sounds like plug wire issue. See if you can find a local shop to work on it. See previous posts covering replacing the wires. Many like to use Taylor wires.
Omey's web site could be helpful in getting replacement wires.

What is your email address? I can email you a .PDF document of the 8.1 wiring. Is this a W or P chassis?

Bert1938, I have had two previous gas rigs where the main wiring harness that laid on top of the engine was stretched so tight on the top of the air conditioning compressor bracket that wiring became shorted inside of the wiring loom and would blow fuses. Check to see if there are any worn spots on the main loom.
