Dale ain't the only one that can build a DYI
Cold Air Induction...this one cost 8 bucks.
I tie-wrapped a remote thermometer sender unit
to the grille bar just in front of the laughable
dryer vent hood and the temperatures shown were
never any more than ambient. No rain injestion
and stone quiet. The OE intake was a mushroom
cap at the radiator bulkhead wall, where radiant
heat from the radiator itself sneaked into the
incoming charge.

I post this here because there may be some other Owners
of P12 Chevy Chassis rigs lurking about.

Mike---

Yep. Donaldson says the OE air filter will flow
in excess of 1300-cu.ft./min (that's more than
the throttle body) so I figured: What the heck?
Why not? ... and I put in a NAPA/Wix HD (bigger
around) PAPER filter element in it and went with it. 8-bucks! Only 2 parts bought!!

I have a low opinion of oiled air filter elements.

Steady... DIY Engineering at it best.

Oiled filters work if done properly. I just cleaned mine the other day and when I checked the MAF it was clean no oil. I just dusted it off with natural bristle brush.

There's a formula that says for every 10* F.
drop in Intake Air Temperature you can gain 1%
in power. Consider that my 454, at the intake
cap, the air was heat soaking at every stop sign and running 30* to 40* warmer than ambient down the road, for eight dollars I gained some.

But that is not the real reason for the CAI.

I am told--dunno--that a GM OBD2 brainbox will begin to pull engine timing out of the advance tables at an IAT of 86* F. Any spark retard results in a net loss of power. Kenne Bell, of
Supercharger fame, claims one degree of retard
equals a loss of 4 HP. If these two things are
true and even if the numbers are incorrect, then
THIS is the real reason for a CAI install...

Dale--

Thank you for the kind words..

Mike, at Brazel's, saw the beauty of it, and
jumped in, only nine minutes after I posted the pics.

The mod works. And I smile every time I check
the oil. Remember the old camera ad on TV?
"It's so advanced it's simple..." It is just
sick...

And..I e-mailed the Mfg. of the Dryer Vent and
gently asked if their "hood" caused any backpressure against my "clothes dryer" and
they said: "No, it is engineered to flow the
same amount of air as a 4" vent pipe.."

Back in the day we use to run air ducts down to the lower grill to get fresh air to the air filter. Cooler air is more dense than warm air, less restriction in air flow gets more air to the engine and all of this is free HP. The down side is sound...

You are right..the sound issue is why I chose
to e-mail the Donaldson Engineering Group and
ask them point-blank what their air-cleaner was
capable of doing for me. They said lots of flow
and the built-in resonators would quiet things down. And...those guys are all hot-rodders at
heart, they "hinted" that black was the "wrong"
color for their entire air cleaner tubing run,
due to heat soak, but that black was a color
that the OEM (GM) wanted. And then they left me hanging there. I have since found out about
how colors absorb heat and I think that I need to dis-assemble the Donaldson filter housing/tubes and shoot
it, either white or dull silver, with Krylon
Fusion Paint (for plastics)...it (the paint) may
be good for a 15* reduction of heat...radiant
heat from the engine...
