I just bought a 1999 Damon Daybreak 23,000 miles, like brand new inside, decal issue outside but it sat for years. I am however having a brake problem. when it gets hot the brake will not return once pushed. It goes to the floor and stays there causing the coach to practically stop on the highway. I use my toes to pull it back up again. It is a chevy 454 on a p30 chassi. A mechanic put a new master cylinder on , but that did not fix the problem. Any ideas

Try the brake lines. When we bought our 87 Allegro with 454 the previous redid all the braking componets except the brake lines. The line collasped and caused them to lock up.

Good Luck
Arnold

kido: First let me say WELCOME to iRV2.com

Your post seems to indicate the problem is that your service brakes REMAIN applied and that the pedal has to be returned "manually", but you don't say if returning the pedal releases the brakes. Obviously, having the pedal "go to the floor" is not good, BUT "ususally" that is a sign that the BF is boilng and needs to be replaced. Since swapping the MC did not fix the problem, in addition to replacing the hoses suggested above, I would be looking hard at the linkage from the pedal to the MC to see if it might be getting into a bind somewhere and leaving the brakes applied. Can you add a spring to the linkage somewhere to help return the pedal?

Lastly, since you have a P32 you most likely have the infamous J71 AAPB. If so, you will want to contact the EXPERT on that system-Roger Haag. He operates a free service called the Auto Park Library, and he has helped MANY owners with various issues on their P32 parking brake. Roger can best be reached via email to : oldusedbear11@charter.net

Good luck and safe travels,
Ed

Thank you to everyone that has replied. we have looked at everything you suggested..Here is the update... We had the master changed which did help the actual braking. We have checked the linkage, the calibers, the lines but nothing fixed the brake return problem. We drove 130 miles with out a mishap but the mechanic had it happen when taking it for a test drive.
Someone said something about a booster. Is anyone familiar with this? Don't want to keep replacing parts unnecessarily. I guess the transmission fluid is what operates the brakes?

I'm confused. You say you have a Chevy P-30 chassis. Ed Gray calls it a P-32.

In either case, replace both front rubber brake hoses. They are noted for collapsing internally. Do you have a tag axle? Is it a hydro-boost tag axle?

Do you have the auto parking brake system?

Sounds like a vacuum booster problem.

Hi Max!

I "call it a P32" 'cause that's what it is...there ain't no P30 , but I've given up trying to convince people of that FACT.

YOUR suggestion about replacing the hoses is excellent advice.

YES, more than likely he has the J71 AAPB, but since that is determined by GVWR, I really don't KNOW if he does, or doesn't.
Ed

Ed, I sustain your position and commend you for the position that you have taken because you are in fact correct. Any chassis that has been used for OE RV applications whether from GM or Workhorse has always been officially known as a P32.
Folks from GM and others simply dropped the "2" out of convenience and brevity.

Although WCC brought to market the P-32 Wide Track chassis, for the purposes of talking about the RV chassis, Workhorse has been calling it a P Series for as long as I remember. No numbers required.
