i have a 2002 p32 that has not been used for the past 2 months. When I started it today the tacho seems to be wacky. It jumps up and down. If say I am at 2300 rpm (via scan gauge) the tach jumps from 2300 up to say 4000 and back every few seconds. If I accelerate to say 3500 the tach pegs up at 6000. The alternator seems to be charging intermittently as well. First it was charging then seemed to not be although the little battery symbol on the dash did not light. The volt meter was low though. Then I found that if I activated the start boost solenoid that jumps the start and house battery's it would then charge and keep charging. The scan gauge has been a bit erratic too. When it is charging the tach seems ok. With the scangauge reading the voltage its all over the place. 12.2 11.5 12.9 11.2 12.6 etc It changes every couple of seconds. I never noticed this before but it may have always done that. Is this the infamous ignition switch problem or is it something else.

Loose/corroded connection? If it works correctly when the load of the house batteries is in the circuit it seems like it is between the alternator and chassis battery. I would start at the small terminal on the starter solenoid, this is a distribution point for a lot of power, go from there.
