Po315 code

Hello and new here.

We just bought a 32ft itasca sunrise. Itís a 2003 8.1L W22. We drove it home thru the Rockies fine and mileage was 9.6mpg. But it was the Rockies, but madden trip was flawless.

The engine has 24k on it, and after buying a scanner to know mileage etc, it reports a po315 camshaft sensor relearn. Hum... comes back after a clear. Everything seems to be ok.

Question? If I just change the sensor, will I still have to do a relearn on the new part? Bi-direction scanners are $$$$

Welcome to the Forum!
Give Jon Brazel a call (Ultra RV Products, our sponsor) and he can give you expert opinion on what's what regarding WH error codes . I've known those guys for 12+ yrs and gotten great help. Tell them Duner said to call.

Thanks, I gave him a call, and he gave me a few things to try. Just trying to avoid a local GM dealer at all costs!

Having a real issue with finding someone that can do a relearn. Local gm says I am too big for him to work on. Same with next town. There is a way to try and relearn with no scanner, but requires a lot of fast flat long driving. Anyone have any recommendations?

i replaced my crank position sensor

a recall item actually on 2001[maybe a few more years also] workhorse 8.1L.

this is what I used to do a relearn, I got it from a respected GM source.

sounds scary to some people, but it is not......funny these are the same people that think nothing of floorboarding it all the way up a 11% grade.....something I will not do.

warm up engine TO OPERATING TEMP n do a 'relearn' for the computer.....with foot on brake slowly take warm engine to 5000+rpms, computer shuts down motor on rev limit and you will see tach bounce from 4500-5000....let off throttle.... then n all sensors are 'relearned'.

foot MUST be on brake the whole time, engine must be warm n slowly take engine UP in rpms.

What gear do you have the transmission in?, If it's in park, the engine will not go past 3000 rpms.

i would say neutral

since you say it rev limits at 3000 in park....I cannot remember.....but since I accomplished this........I guess it MUST have in neutral.

in an hour or two.......I'm going to do it again....I will report back.

Mine being an '01

will rev up passed 3000 in park............if newer ones will not in park, I would try neutral........remember the brake pedal must be pressed thru the whole cycle.

if you can't get this rev-up done

Rather than spend money at the stealership, I would buy a Tech2 code reader.......Kevin on IRV here bought one of the none-GM issued ones, loves it and so have other people.

They look exactly like the GM model, are said to be the exact same thing from the company that makes them for GM, and all reports I have seen especially from GM employed techs that bought these units for their own use, have said they will perform ALL functions.........220$.....I think I will buy one myself just for future use.

I’ll give it a try tomorrow, but a bit worried to cause and damage? What is the rev redline on 8.1? I assume 6000? And again what happens when I hit5000 rpm on a warm engine? Does it shut off or do I just back off after reaching 5000 rpms and it’s done a relearn?

I guess I will try park and if I have to do again natural
