My pwr steering pump makes a continual whining sound that increases with engine rpm. Doesn't matter if engine is cold or hot, same noise. Mechanic at the dealer said it was a normal Workhorse characteristic. Is he right?

If it is a normal Workhorse characteristic, why don't I hear mine? I had a pump winning and had it replaced two years ago, by workhorse. I'd talk to the service manager first and then go to Workhorse if you have too.

Yeah, it was full. Has whined from day one and seems to be getting worse.

Ask that "mechanic" if that whining sound is in the pump specs. Get it replaced on YOUR terms, not on the road in a driving rain storm.

Teach, I had the same problem. Since I have had the RV brand new, I had the power steering pump replaced, power steering gearbox replaced and both hoses replaced. My noise was still evident.

I just found out that for the past 18,000 miles in the power steering reservoir at the very bottom there is a screw-in filter. Mine was laying in there doing nothing. It had never been connected at the factory.

To access it, you will have to pull the clamp off the cannister and lift the cover up and put your hand down in and see if it is connected or just laying down at the bottom. You will lose some fluid and, if that is the case, you should be able to screw it back in.

Also, try to isolate your high pressure hose. That also helped alleviate the noise.

Good luck. Blaine

Teach, check the lower radiator shroud. If the engine fan is rubbing it, it sounds just like a power steering pump whine. I know, I have two lower shrouds with holes worn in the bottom of them from the fan rubbing. Rick

Rick, not to get off the subject but that is not an uncommon problem. If you chassis is still under warranty it can be replaced. If not you should still replace it but add a teck screw (self drilling screw) to the bottom of the shroud to the lower brace for the radiator to secure it down from the fan.
