Hi, I am new to this forum and hope someone has encountered this problem and has some advice. We have a 2003 Southwind on a Workhorse chassis. We travel to Florida every winter. Like everyone going from the midwest (Ohio) we run I77 to I95. We always stop in Wytheville, VA for fuel. Every time we stop there, no matter at which station, the pump will allow about 1/2 gallon to be pumped in, then shuts off. It is like when the tank is full, but of course, it isn't. We once spent 45 minutes just putting in $100.00. This happens ONLY in Virginia. We are wondering if this is pecular to our unit or if the state has their pumps regulated somehow and if anyone else has had this problem. Any and all comments will be appreciated. Thanks, Linda

Well, that certainly sounds like it would be the answer, however, if that was the case, wouldn't it happen at all fuel stops? It only happens in VA.

Sounds like a clogged vent. Heat & vibration from pulling hills & the altitude change could be giving you a serious tank full of fumes.
If it has a serious burp when you open the cap, you have venting issues.

Linds, I go make and forth from GA the ME alot and I fill up in VA all the time and have done it in two different MHs. Normally right there in Wytheville at the Flying J because the prices are good. I have never had a problem. If you had a vent problem then it should occur else where also. I agree it sure souunds like a vent problem but I wouldn't work on it too much if it only happens in VA.

The problem is that motor homes are wide, 8 1/2 feet wide, and thus the filler tube from the hole in the wall you stick the nozzle to to the tank runs at a very shallow angle.
Also venting of the tank is not as good as it could be.. For the same reason
There is a solution or two
Some motor homes have dual fill (Gas caps on either side) open both. That way the other one acts as the vent. Mine does not.
So, If it's an area I spend a lot of time in I look for pumps where the rig will be tilted slightly AWAY from the pump.. If that does not work,, I drop pump-side jack to tilt the rig away from the pump as well.
ON my coach nose down seems to help as well.. Thankfully the side to side jack is the rear one so dropping the pump side jack also puts me nose down.
Your rig may vary on that last, but drop the pump side jack and see if that helps.

Check the fuel fill rubber hose. Mine had a kink in it, making it hard to fill. Used some tyraps to take kink out and have had no problem of late. Over time the hose will sag, putting a restriction in it.

I have an '05 Bounder and had the same problem, it took 30 minutes to fill the tank. Problem was the vent hose at the filler point. There was a huge dip in the vent hose, when filling, fuel would get into the vent hose and effectively seal it off. I cut 7" off the hose and reconnected it, never had a problem since and I did it 5 years ago.

Watch for the kink, mine had one, and the hose failed at that point. (was pumping gas onto the ground). There is a metal 90 on the fill hose, and then another short rubber hose into the tank I needed to shorten short straight section to get rid of the kink in the main run of hose.

Good advice from Tincup, a sagging vent hose can collect gasoline in the low point and prevent the tank from properly venting.Gasoline could be sloshing around and collecting in the vent hose onyour way down from Ohio to Virginia. Only takes a peek under the coach to check, and if it is sagging, a couple of tie wraps should solve the problem.

Back in 2005, the body builder was finishing off the fuel fill system. I believe it was 1 year later when Workhorse decided that there were too many anomalies with fuel systems so they began delivering completely plumbed and finished fuel systems and fill piping. No longer was the chassis delivered with the pump in a pony tank requiring moving and installing the pump in the tank by the OEM.
When the chassis is delivered it is expected that the OEM will simply fit and bolt up the gas cap enclosure to their body work and that's it.
