Would Brazels reply if the quad caliper brakes on the W24 will bolt to the W22 chassis? I think you could sell some brakes I am willing.

You would not only need the calipers but the pads and rotors as well if the Quadraulic calipers would work with the Hydro-Max being setup for 66mm Bosch calipers. Next thing would be the ABS computer. All in all I expect that it would be less expensive to buy a new motorhome.

Sorry I do not know the compatibility of the W24 brakes with the W22...I'm assuming that you would run into the problems listed by Driver.

We haven't really looked into solutions like these because why would anyone buy calipers from us when they knew they were going to (eventually) get free calipers from Workhorse?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Mr Brazel; Let me run this by you for your thoughts. I purchased a used 2006 Georgie boy Luxurea on a w24 chassis. It had the Banks system installed with a driver side exit. One month after purchase traveling down to the Colorado river. we could smell the brakes I still had good brakes. We stooped went inside to get camp spot and when I went to follow DW to the spot I had no Brakes ABS light on. I had to pump the to work. After the weekend we headed home only 100 miles, again with the ABS light on and spongy brakes. We got her home brakes got better. After looking it over the right rear abs sensor was melted and hanging out. I believe the problem was caused by Thar banks exhaust system that runs down the driver side and under the ABS distribution system. and then in the back where the turn to exit hydraulic distribution system. I believe these systems got very over heated and malfunctioned. Sense then I have wrapped them both with a heat shield material to deflect the heat. I turned this into a camping world for repair well a month later repairs were completed. and all works. the tech only replaced the 2 rear abs sensors. Do you think the locating of There exhaust could have caused this problem? That is the only reason i could come up with. This is one to think about !!! Thanks JP & Good Luck Lets hear your thoughts

I'm pretty sure the Meritor 4-piston calipers would work, so long as the bolt pattern matches, and the pads & rotors are replaced at the same time. The only thing electronic on them is the ABS sensor which is a plug in device, goes in a socket (as it does on the W24). The ABS computer would probably work without modification tho some check on that would make sense prior (he equivocated). My ABS is a Meritor-Wabco, not sure what is used on the W22, but it only has to read the "bar-code" on the caliper to know when the wheel locks so anybody's ABS should work (he said). Other than that, the whole thing is mechanical and transfers hydraulic pressure from the HydroMax. My rig has a HMax master cylinder with a bell crank actuator, although the lower arm may be reversed from the W24 direction, but the master cylinder is in place so no mod should be needed there (he said).
Sounds like a fun weekend project.

all I would like to know if the bolt pattern would work.
I don't use abs. If they would bolt up hyd pressure is hyd pressure the caliper would not know if it was on a w22 or w24
I am willing to purchase calipers, pads, and rotor, no problem

I would think that the bolt patterns would be made different enough to keep someone from putting on the wrong caliper. I can't image any shop taking on the liability of making the switch or even saying it will work. If you are serious buy one pull a wheel and see if it will fit, if not return it. You will be taking on all liability for any problems/accidents by making the change.

Here is Workhorse's response:

"Jon,

I passed your question onto our field engineer and his response was “No” you can’t use the W24 caliper on the W22. The mounting bracket would need to be changed out and that would not bolt up to the steering knuckle so it would not work.

Sorry."

So can you change out the mounting bracket, caliper, rotor, pads...?
Are the rotors the same diameter? Wheels the same offset (or at least self adjusting in this case)?
added on edit: Not necessarily the case that the correct mounting bracket would be available. The early Alpines using the larger 70mm version of the ZOHT (or ZOPS pre first recall) caliper were 28,000gvw or so, a bit above the W24 gvw IIRC. So the weight ratings for the lighter W22 may be low enough that Meritor may not have considered it worthwhile to make the adapter down to the axle ratings used on the W22. These are really questions for a Meritor rep (WH has no good reason to service this type of aftermarket Q&A, i.e. why get yet another permutation in the mix of brake problems?), where Meritor may think there is no down side. Then again Meritor might also take the approach that w/out an OEM in between, no reason to egg consumers on to something likely to at least have a high overhead associated w/a few outlaw motorhomers trying to soup up their brakes.

This is obviously a serious aftermarket mod, somewhat akin to lift kits and the whole nine that Jeepers subscribe to, so not something a large number of motorhomers would sign up for.

Why can't a company like Stainless Steel brakes just offer new pistons? If the caliper is ok but the pistons swell up why not just machine new pistons? I must be missing something about this problem because a lot of companies that offer rebuilt brakes routinely change the pistons for stainless steel. Is there more to it than pistons? As far as not many people signing up for a retrofit I believe you are wrong. WH may never offer a solution to this problem and even if they do it could prove to be as bad as the first since there will be no long term field testing of it. I want to use my MH and I value my family's safety at the same time. The fact that no one has been killed is a miracle.

I'm sorry but it just would not be cost effective for us to take on a project like that to R&D something that we know would fix the problem, only to have Workhorse come out with their recall calipers at no charge to every customer with a W20/22...It simply does not make business sense.

Now I'm not saying that something couldn't be done in the interim to fix the problems but it would be hard to tell if it actually fixed it until you get quite a few miles/years on the updated parts.

Interesting topic for sure though.

My mechanic put new Chevy truck replacement calipers and pads on my W20. He says that the Chevy trucks used to have the same calipers as we have but all the relacement Chevy truck calipers are all steel and they don't have this problem. Mine have been working fine - no problem. He has put this replacement calipers on many Workhose W chassis.
