Questions on our purchased M/H

Hi...I'm new here. We just bought a 2004 Tiffin Allegro 27.5 ft. with the 8.1 liter engine and Workhorse chassis. It has 11,500 miles on it. We take delivery tomorrow. Is there anything I should be aware of about this rig?
I tried calling Tiffen and Workhorse for maintenance schedules and an oil recommendation, with very little response. All I got was that it takes 10w30 oil after about 2 hours total waiting on the phone. Any other pointers would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Workhorse chassis have been subject to at least two important recalls recently - one to replace a clip on a component on the fuel rail on the engine, and the second to repair/replace faulty brake calipers. See the "sticky" at the top of the Workhorse Forum for info on the brake recall. Ask the dealer to check to make sure both recalls have been done.

Oil change interval is 3,000 miles. There is another "sticky" at the top of the Workhorse Forum called 2009 Workhorse Chassis Guide. You might want to download that for info on maintenance. Most info for 2009 chassis will also apply to 2004.

I assume you know about the brake recall on Workhorse chassis of that year. Make sure that if it is a 04 Workhorse chassis that the work has been done and the documentation is in hand. As suggested join the Tiffin forum as there would be alot of info there on the coach itself. Make sure you get the chassis registered now in your name. You can find that help on the Workhorse forum here as well. By calling and giving Workhorse the vin number of the chassis they can tell you everything that has been done to that particular unit. Hope this helps a little.

And by the way also Happy Motoring!!

Full.Monte: WELCOME to iRV2.com We are glad you joined and posted your question. In order to get the most appropriate answers, you will need to provide info on WHICH Workhorse chassis you have. If you need help determining that, please post the last 8 digits of the VIN #(begins with 5B4), which will allow us to get the details for you.

We have many knowledgable owners here, and most will try to help answer your questions, but sometimes they make assumtions which may not apply to your model chassis....that is why the details are important. I don't want you stressing about recalls and such if they don't apply to you!

OBTW, the standard recommendation for all WCC 8.1L motors has always been 5W30 oil, changed every 3 MO or 3,000 miles, WECF. The 10W30 variety can be used during summertime conditions.......

I hope everything goes well for you during delivery. Please post any questions you may have and enjoy your new coach! Ed

Full Monte,

Welcome. As to which oil weight to use, for your location in Campbell, CA, 10W/30 would be my choice for your climate zone. Oil brand is your preference, as long as it meets engine manufacturerers specs. I have been using Mobil 1 synthetic since the second oil change in my 2004 Workhorse, and change it at 5000 mile intervels. Congratulations on your purchase.

I'm buying from a private party. I'm not sure what's been done to it. She's looking for all the receipts. I'll definitely have the brake situation checked.

The last 8 digits of my ID number are 23353669.

Thanks for all the help!

Based on the #s you provided, I can tell you are getting a 2002 P32 Workhorse MH chassis. The model # is P31832 with a 178" WB and 18,000 pound GVWR. It has the 8.1L and a GM 4L80-E tranny. The good news is that, as I suspected, there are NO recalls ( open or completed ) on this chassis, so you don't need to worry about that.

The bad news is that it IS equipped with the infamous J71 AAPB, which means you should consider getting in touch with Roger Haag, THE J71 expert, at oldusedbear11@charter.net or at oldusedbear@oemys-performance.com so he can get you any info you may need for the care and feeding of this parking brake system.

Currently, the WCC records indicate the owner to be "McCann", so you will want to notify WCC of your private party purchase, prove your ownership via a copy of some legal document, and request YOU be shown as the current owner so you will receive any future mailings from them. After you get yourself registered at "My Workhorse", you will be able to download the free chassis guide, which has an entire section dedicated to the P32.

We have lots of P32 owners here in the workhorse forum, so please come back often and ask any questions you may have. OBTW, there is also a Tiffin owners forum here on iRV2.com, as well as the Tiffin network located elsewhere.

Again, WELCOME to iRV2 and especially the workhorse forum! Ed

Regarding engine and drive train and chassis issues, LIke oil change and lubrication, forget Tiffien go with Workhorse Custom Chassis. (The workhorse forum here)

you will want to set up an "account" (Internet type) with Workhrose and register as the owner, Check to see that any and all recalls which have been issued (if any) on your rig have been satisified.

NOTE that save for the company names, I don't care WHAT motor home you buy, this advice applies, so nothing I have said so far is a comment on anyone's product, This is 100% Generic advice.

Now, that said.. I've been kind of happy with my Workhorse and their customer service.

Though as with any company, there are a couple of authorized service centers which needed the man to show up with his pointed toe shoes... Which, by the way, he did.
