Radiator maintenance

I had a radiator cap failure early this year and was serviced on the road as a breakdown on the interstate. The mobil repair replaced the cap and refilled the radiator with 2 gals. of streight dex cool.
Will the streight dex cool instead of a 50/50 mixture affect the freeze point this winter. I am in lower Michigan and during my checklist I remembered what had happened on the Interstate,
Thanks in advance

Yes, it will effect your freeze point. Normally you would not want more than a 70/30 mix and 2 gals of straight ant-freeze might put at or past that level. I would have it tested to see what your freeze level is and you should be able to calculate the mix level.

Rottie! .... Like Oemy suggested you have to mindful about the coolant mixture. Straight anti freeze isn't coolant. A mixture of water and anti freeze together make coolant. The coolant affords you anti-freeze properties when its properly installed in your cooling system. I'm not sure how you would test high concentrations of anti freeze as opposed to a coolant mixture.

Take a look at page #24 in the 2009 Chassis Guide for concentration tables.

Depending on where you live and/or where you drive you may want to reduce your coolant mix to say 25/75 for better cooling. Say WHAT? Yes, it is true that ANTIFREEZE is poor conductor of heat when compared to water alone. So, if your running in Texas, AZ, NM in the summer then a 25/75 mix is better than 50/50. But if your running up north or storing your rig where it freezes then the 50/50 mix should be correct.

50/50 smarty...

But, say you live in MN but do most of your driving in the heat of the SW you may want to experiment with 25/75.

Thanks Mike and Omey.
I checked the antifreeze mixture yesterday and the bulb type instrument said I am good till 37 degrees below zero.
If it gets that cold here I am going to snowy Texas.
