Anybody know what you call the little bolts that hold the rear brake disc dust covers on?
On the inside of the wheel, 3 weird little bolts about 10mm head, somekind of motified torx. What is the proper name for a bolt with a head like this?
I don't have a tool that will remove them and I can,t make the auto part store understand what I need
Their pretty tight. I am going to replace them with a real six point bolt if I can get them out. I need the cover off to inspect for cracks in my disc.

Ron........ They may be a Tamper Proof screw that has a tip sticking up in the middle of the head. If they are, here is what you need.

It is somewhat frangible. On a larger fastener it may be more difficult.

My Gulf Stream dash simulated wood facing is put together with these. Guess they don't want anybody tampering with all the valuable items behind it like the Actia panel. But I fooled em and bought a set of these little jewels.

thats the same tamper proof screw that AT&T uses to keep its cust out of their side of the outside network interface. Yes you can buy one most anywhere.

If you reach around in front of the shield. You will be able to run your fingers tips around and feel - palpate - to see if there are any cracks. I even tried a small mirror at first. If no cracks - don't bother wrestling with your wheels.

They are not the tamper proof torx like you guys are thinking.
It is a male head with very fine teeth, torx looking. Yes I can feel the rotors but if I can get these bolts out I could also see them.

You should be able to use a 12 point socket on it. Don't mess it up with vise grips.

No, but I understand the kind of bolt you are talking about. I did'nt know you could use a normal 12 point wrench or socket on them either, til a mechanic showed me.
A 9/16" is a good guess , but you'll have to let us know the size wrench it takes

One thing that you may not be able to see well without removing the tires would be the outside face of the rotor on the rear axle. On the front axle you can look through the holes in the wheels and get a descent look.
Another important look would be an edge on view of the pads looking at the edge of the rotor. Make sure the friction material is thicker than the back plate if not you will need to replace your pads before the back plate begins scoring the face of the rotor.
I had an opportunity to look at my brakes with the tires removed and it does present the best view.

They do sell external torx sockets, but I've used a regular 12 point socket, and it worked.
