Cool Rear Seal Leak

I noticed my left rear has been dripping slightly. Enough so that it can be seen on the chrome wheel cover. It does this after setting for awhile. Maybe a couple of weeks or so. It's not much of a leak, and I checked the rear axle lub level which is still okay. But I'd like to correct it so where can I get a new, I assume gasket?

Oemy, if you're listening (reading this) do you have any of the gaskets?

I'm down in south Texas on the Gulf Coast and there are no Workhorse Dealers around here anywhere.

No gaskets... But, you might try calling my buddy Glenn at OEM-Engineering.

I assume you are talking about a leak around the axel bolts. Just try tightining them, it should work. If it's not your axel that you are talking about you should see a doctor right away. Leakage can be very messy!!!!

All they use is blue Permatex silicone sealant and that's all there is to it.

Mine were leaking some time back. Just put a wrench to them, stopped the weep. There is no pressure on the seals.

Bob, If you are going to take the time to apply a wrench, float the rear tire on the rear jack, back off on the axle bolts, apply the sealant and restore the axle and the bolts. If it's worth doing ..... it's worth doing well!

Hey DriVer, do you mean jack it up high off the ground so that the axle is sloped to the opposite side so the oil won't pour out when all the bolts are loose and the cap is off?

Can you pull that axle cap off without having internal parts coming apart or being misaligned?

My drivers side rear has been weeping for 2 or 3 years but it's getting worse now in the last 6 months. It makes a mess of my Alcoa rims. My band-aid fix was to wrap a rag around it, secure it with wire and put the ss hub cap back on. It's been a couple of months now and I don't see any more messy weeping. I tried to torque the bolts tighter but those suckers were very tight already.

Happy New Year,
Bill

Bill yes but I'm only talking a very few degrees off center and high enough so you can spin the tires. Do not get under the vehicle.

Yes, Absolutely - that's why you want to float the wheels. When you restore the axle it'll align itself and you can restore it to its normal position. When you seat the axle you can turn the hub by hand and it'll mesh back up with the gears. I'd do it with both sets of tires floating and you can favor the working side slightly higher using your jack controls.

Chock your front tires.

Clean both surfaces, apply a bead of Permatex sealant and then restore the axle and tighten per spec.

You can tighten those bolts until they break BUT it won't fix the problem. There aren't any gaskets in there to rip or wear, it's just a bead of sealant. Make sure you also check the differential on a level surface to see if your axle is overfilled.

Happy New Year to you to!
Mike

My rear hubs have a clear plastic seal. So just re torquing the bolts did the job.

replace rear outer wheel bearing today. I was having axle leak fixed but found a bad bearing and metal shavings in the oil.

Make you wonder. These things just don't normally get loose.

Only had to re-torque once. First long trip out west.

All the torque thru the rear axle from the differential is applied to the wheels thru these small axle studs. They can get loose sometimes.
