I wrote about my transmission not shifting out of 3rd and the trans light coming on 25 july 2008. It took over 7 days, two 85 mile tows, and 4 shops before I was on my way home. Don't have transmission problems in Amarillo Texas. First, the only shop in town that could read the codes, didn't want to work on my rv because the shop worked only on Freightliners. I was told my problem was a bad nsbu switch and wiring harness. They said take my rv to another shop to have the work done. The next shop couldn't read the codes so they just changed the switch and said the wiring harness was ok. The test drive was ok except for hard shifting at 30 mph. Drove 85 miles and got gas. I started the engine, the trans light came on and it wouldn,t shift out of 3rd. Towed the rv back to Amarillo to shop that changed the switch. Since he couldn,t read the codes I called Chad Burkham of Stewart Stevenson, a customer service rep for allison. He got the shop in touch with a allison man that told him what wiring harness was required to read the codes on a workhorse. He checked out every thing the manual said to check with no luck. The last thing the manual said was to check the TCM. He took a TCM from a different truck to see if it would make my trans shift. It did so a TCM was ordered by me. They were to put in the program and overnight it to me. Since I ordered it on saturday, it was Monday before it was installed. The test drive was ok with no hard shifts. Started for home but when I got to some hills the trans would shift twice with high rpms. They had not put the latest program in the TCM. Called ahead to Wichita Falls Tx to make apt the next day to have them reprogram the TCM. They reprogramem the TCM and I test drove the rv. It worked ok. I had them test the old TCM and they said they couldn,t find anything wrong with it. I drove the rest of the way home with no problem. Since I was told the old TCM was ok, I really don't know if the trans is really fixed. Two thousand dollars spent and waiting for the other shoe to fall.

Had the same problem in 04/2007. Driving along on I-80 trans light came on and went into limp mode. Pull off checked fluid looked under neath everything looked OK. Re-started the engine the trans light went off. Drove 4 miles it came back on. Pulled off on exit 440 North Omaha, luckily there was a DD/Allison shop at that exit. The Tech pulled the TCM to get the codes, they couldn't find the correct plug. With that code he knew what the problem was. Bad wiring from the TCM to The Turbo Speed sensor. He told me it was the most common problem and repair he does on the 1000 series transmission as he said the trans itself is bullet proof. Luckily my Trans need the converter inspection that the first owner never had done so it only cost me 1 hour labor and the difference between DEX and Transyn. If your problem re-occurs have them take a hard look at the wiring from the turbo speed sensor.
Steve

Would you please send me the name and telephone number of the shop that did the work on your transmission. Since all shops are not equal, I want to have adequate information when I talk to the shop here in Dallas. Thank you for this information.

Interstate Power Systems 402-331-4104
It's a heavy truck repair shop 16 bays. Very good to work with. Since they only had one tech that worked on 1000/2000 trans and he couldn't start till 07:00 am they gave us a spot to hook up and loaned us a car for the night all at no charge.
I was told that some 1000 series trans built in 2002 were built with the wrong torque converter and there was a service bulletin issued at one point to have them inspected at no charge, they have to drop the pan so it was the perfect time to upgrade to Transyn.Allison can tell if you need this from the serial number on the trans.

Thanks! We had the torque converter changeout
done last year. No notice given about it but Stewart Stevenson in Arlington located the bullet when we had it serviced and did the whole change out plus changed over to synthetic fluid. Thought we had all the bases covered!

If you go to "My Workhorse" and register you can get your specific transmission serial number.

One more thing. I was also told that on this vintage trans that there was service bulletin to replace the gear selector switch. Since the former owner didn't have this done under warranty, the charge was $26.95 for the part but they did the install at no charge.

The allison trans effected were shipped fron the factory between June 1999 and March 2002. The S/N between S/N 6310001000 and S/N 631023136. The field action 2004FA-1 is a Allison Trans Customer Satifaction Field Action. It says it will be authorized to change the torque coonverters untill Feb 1,2008. I got my trans off the side of the trans.
