Having been the owner of a Tiffen Allegro for one whole day, I have some dumb questions. Do you guys use regular gas, mid-range, or premium? If I recall, the compression ratio is 9.1 to 1. Thanks!

87 octane regular unleaded gasoline with not more than 10% ethanol is the recommended fuel. You can use higher octane, but you don't need it.

NEVER use E85.

I put 60,000 miles on my 8.1 and use the lowest grade, usually 87 octane.

In the midwest I ran the 85 octane and did just fine.

Owner's manual on my 8.1 says Regular and that's what I use.

Many folks are absolutly sure that higher grade gives better something.

And they are right, it gives better profit to the oil company stockholders.

Does nothing for your ride with one possible exception..

If you are working the devil out of an engine,, it **MIGHT** make a difference.. however on the 8.1, I seriously doubt you will ever work it that hard. In fact, I seriously doubt it will make a difference on most any engine manufactured this century.

It did on a 1977 I used to drive which had a defective carb.. I mean I kept records.. When I put a new carb on it.. that changed.

In my travels I have found fuel with lower than 87 octane, so I go for whatever rating gets me at or above 87 octane; regular, mid, or premium.

Always use 87 Octane, Regular Unleaded or above. In some areas you may have to use 88 or 89 but don't use less.

At higher altitude,85 octane performs the same as 87 octane. Just use the gas labeled REGULAR

As a side note, your engine will actually make LESS power on higher octane fuel. Reason being, all the stuff that boosts octane (and raises the flashpoint of the fuel, so it can be used in higher compression engines) actually reduces the amount of energy in each gallon of fuel. Now, if you have a high compression motor that takes advantage of the fuel, you can get more power... but in an 8.1 designed for 87 octane, you will lose about 3% power.

I never had the opportunity to try 85. I called the Workhorse Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and told them were I was geographically. I was told to use 87 or higher Octane. This was during our western US tour back in 2005. I didn't have a problem with knock or any other issues using 88 Octane BUT it was more expensive.
