I am thinking about removing the core plugs on my 8.1. I am just trying to do a better job of flushing the block and I would like to peek in there. I would like to know if any of you have removed these core plugs and if you have had any problems getting them sealed again. I know they are threaded and I have the tool to unscrew them.

There is no problem. Go ahead and open them up (2) to drain the coolant. When you restore the plugs, all you need is a a wrap and a half or so (light tef tape) and just tighten the plug until it's feel good tight. Don't go crazy because it's NPT so it does not need to be over tightened.

Also remove the lower hose from the radiator.

Hmmm. I think I'd leave sleeping dogs alone.

In the early years of the 8.1 there were problems with those plugs leaking. My 2003 GMC HD2500 was in the shop twice for that reason.

I am curious about one thing though. What are you going to do with the drained antifreeze?

The plugs leaked because they were loose. Mine did - tightened them.

I hope that he brings the old coolant to a recycling center.
