We have a 2005 Fleetwood Bounder 33R gas motor home with a Workhorse W20 chassis that we bought a year ago. The hazard lights (4-way flashers) never worked from the first day. After a lot of head scratching, poking around and checking on the web, I decided that the problem had to be in the hazard switch. Turns out that this switch is part of the turn signal-windshield wiper-cruise control unit that is attached to the steering column and plugs in at the base of the column. Changing the switch requires removing the horn pad and unplugging its wires, the steering wheel, the plastic covers around the column (tricky), and the cable ties and tape that restrain the wire harnesses. The two flat connectors that are siamesed with the main power connector (one on either side) must be unplugged. This is accomplished by unscrewing the bolt that is in the middle of the main plug. Then the two turn signal connectors can be push down and out of the carrier. There is also a plug connection to the brake light switch which is part of the cruise control. Pull the little green locking tab out and unplug the connector. Two torx screws secure the unit in place. Assembly is the reverse. Put the two flat connectors back into the main plug carrier before reconnecting. Just press the two ends of the plug block together and screw in the bolt. It should go together VERY easily. If not, you may have a bent connector pin.
Now as to why the failure since I have never had a turn signal switch of any kind go bad. Pulled the old assembly apart. There are three triangular spring loaded connector pads in the hazard switch. One of these was stuck down (or up) because the plastic had slightly melted. Maybe the fact that there are 12 bulbs (10 outside lights and 2 dash lights) and no relays in the hazard circuit has something to do with it!!
There is a YouTube video on how to do the replacement at
I bought my replacement switch at MonsterAutoParts.com. Part# is TL0001. About $63.
There has been some discussion that the hazards will fail after long periods (30 minutes) of use. This will, no doubt, overheat the switch and cause the failure.
Question: Has anyone figured out a way to install a relay in the circuit? Probably ought to have relays in the turn signals as well.
