I drove from Estes Park, Co to Grand Lake, Co, Hwy 34. Engine temp going up to Alpine Vis Cen got up to 228 degs, Tansmission temp 208. Going down to Grand Lake, the engine temp 198 and the tansmission got to 240. I would never have guessed, that its harder on the transmision braking, than a hard pull.

That is interesting Ron55. I always thought that , that engine/ transmission braking was'nt free but that proves altho your saving your brakes , there is still wear and tear on the transmission.
Were you pulling anything and what gear did you mostly use, up and down?

My thinking has ALWAYS been, replacing brake pads/shoes
is cheaper than replacing transmissions.....TENN.

Not much wear and tear on the transmission. The heat is coming from the oil in the torque converter. This is normal and doesn't really effect the transmission much. My clutch fan will kick in sometimes going down a long grade on a hot day while the engine temp gauge reads normal. This is due to the heated transmission fluid.

I use my transmission for everything down hill, especially in the Rocky Mountains. I want enough brakes left to slow me down before I turn it into the hill. I went to Leadvill, Buna Vista, Silverton and Ouray, crossded many high passes, pulling a Cherokee except for Trail Ridge Rd. These downhills are 13 to 15 miles I dont think the brakes would make it.
