Had a Safe-T-Plus installed today on my 2005 W22 Dolphin and it is pulling to the left. Spoke with the RV Shop and they said they drove and made several adjustments to get it "right" but it really depends on the condition of the road.

The free-play in the wheel is gone but I have to over compensate for the constant pull to the left else I will move into oncoming traffic.

Is there something I can do to adjust this? I didn't get any installation instructions back with the unit so I have to do something myself or return it to the shop which is a pretty good distance from home.

Thanks.

Here's a link to their web site: Safe-T-Plus

I would suggest calling them and see if they have a technician that could perhaps help you correct the problem.

Best of luck

After having the fella from Rallys-R-Us install our SafeT+ a few years back, we still needed to fine tune it a bit.....he explained the process this way....

Find a nice, level, uncrowned stretch of road and pick a stright line. While running that line, take note of the amount or wheel correction you need to add (left or right) and put a piece of tape top dead center on the wheel (as corrected).

Now find and pull into a flat level parking lot and come to a slow stop while adding in that correction to keep a straight forward line. Piece of tape marker should be at top dead center again. Leave the wheel there.

Crawl under the rig with a 9/16 inch deepwell rachet/socket and loosen the u bolt nuts securing the ram end of the SafeT+ to the suspension cross arm. If loose enough, that bracket should slide a bit. Re-tighten the u bolt nuts again.

Test drive again in the lot first and then on the same stretch of road previously used. It should require less correction.

Might take several attempts to get it dead on. Worked for me.

Safe travels.

I've installed Safe-T-Plus on the three motorhomes I've owned. As mentioned above if you are the least bit mechanically inclined you can do the final adjustment. It might take three or four attempts (or more) till you get it where you want it. I also spray paint on the adjustable bracket next to the U-bolts so I can see if it actually moves. Adjustments may be a very small movement. On different roads it may feel like it pulls one way or the other and also strong constant side winds can make it feel like it is pulling. All that said I do believe the shop that installed it should make it right for you. They should take you with them when they road test it - with you there they should take hands off the steering wheel and see if it goes straight at highway speed and it should do that if on a nice flat straight road.

I agree. I've adjusted mine numerous times but the shop that installed it should stand behind their work and see to it that you're satisfied.

We might also want to suggest that when the clamp is moved do so in 1/16" to 1/8" increments. It won't take very much to throw the steering off by a lot but fine tuning the positioning of the clamp in small chunks will achieve the goal of getting the STP to point straight ahead.

On my STP equipped motorhome, I can let go of the steering wheel and it will track straight forward for a number or yards before I have to crank in some input.

BTW; The guys name is Chip.

I couldn't get mine adjusted properly after say 15 attempts. Broke down, took it in to Redlands Truck, accomplished a front end alignment, problem solved.

Excellent point! I do get concerned that these things can be masking other problems. I've been tempted to disconnect mine for a few hundred miles just to calibrate myself back to the feel of the coach. But so far it's been all talk...

I also want to add the trim kit for the STP so I can adjust on the fly but that capability probably makes it even more important to somehow ensure that the basic mechanics are operating properly.

My experience exactly. I am now very pleased with it after 4 years of great steering and 4 previous years of fighting the wheel.

BTW. the mis alignment (denied by the installer) cost me a set of steer tires.

hamguy, Humor me for a minit. If your toe is out yes your steer tires will wear. If the STP is out of true forward alignment, it will cause you to apply more effort to steer straight ahead counteracting the STP BUT the rubber won't scrub off like a misalignment. I'm just sayin'

Thanks for all of the input. I did call Dave Halls at STP and he walked me through the steps and gave me some tips on making the adjustments. Very nice guy and very willing to assist.

I'll give it a try on Saturday when I have some time to do a few test drives. Will let you know the results.

I had my ST+ installed after verifying the FEA was dead on however the fine tuning was done on the road. It's not likely that a mechanic can dial in an SP+ on the initial setting. There's always going to be a little tweak or a little pull in one direction of another. What the FEA affords you is the opportunity to zero out the box. This helps me a lot and I like it when the spokes on my steering wheel are positioned at 9 and 3.
