salvage 8.1L engine & Allison trans

Some member have concerns that the 8.1L engine is not being manufactured anymore and what to do if you have major problem.

I saw this ad of a salvage yard in Union City IN. posting forsale a 8.1L, Allison trans, wiring, computer with 3,437 mi all for $1,200.

I see we have some options available and if this is a typical price for a low mileage 8.1 then it would indicate their is a good supply.

Send me a PM is you need the tele # of this ad.

Maybe they left off a "zero". the motor & tranny will easily retail for more like $12,000.00, IMO

Allegedly, the PSI 8.8L V-8 engine featuring as much as 1,000 lbs/ft of torque is a direct bolt on replacement.

The PSI 8.8L also comes in LPG/CNG versions.

I was listening to T. Boone Pickens this morning on Morning Joe. During the discussion was the point that trucking operations are starting to move to CNG because of the fuel costs. Currently that seems restricted to local operations where refueling can be done locally. The thought is that if the infrastructure for long haul use get in place...look for a huge paradigm shift.

Navistar is all over it and they are introducing a number of vocational vehicles that are going to be gas powered. They will initially be buying Cummins LPG/CNG engines I read in a press release for certain Classes of vehicles since Cummins has already SKUed a Class 8 product.

"To meet the growing demands of the regional haul and class 7/8 vocational market Navistar will offer the Cummins-Westport ISL-G, in the International® TranStar and WorkStar."

Navistar in the Press release also stated that they will have working solutions across its own MaxxForce line of engines currently including the DT and others.

Here's the Press Release:

Navistar Advances Commitment to Natural Gas Through Partnership With Clean Energy

CNG/LPG is coming! Stay tuned!

At the RVIA Show about 2 years ago, Ford exhibited a CNG/LPG Class C and they were also suggesting that the V10 for Class A F Series Super Duty might go in that direction as well after minor internal hardware mods to the valves.

Actually the PSI data sheet shows about 540 lb/ft as you would expect for a naturally aspirated engine with 537 cu. in. PSI says the block can handle 1000lb/ft. A hot rodder could add a supercharger to get above the 540 lb/ft.

Hmm, I wonder how that chrome S/C snorkel would look protruding out of my doghouse cover...

And Banks probably has a kit in the wings and ready to go as soon as the engines hit the streets!

This 502HP 502cuin (8.2L) GM crate engine looks like the solution. The intake runners are shorter than the 8.1L moving the torque to higher RPM so it is good for 502HP. (costs $10,764.51)

The intake is even prettier than the 8.1L so I think you should have a plexiglass top on the dog house (like a Ferrari) to show it off. Here is the GM blurb:

"GM Performance Parts 12499121 Ram Jet Crate Engine 502 Cubic Inches, 502 Horsepower
Modern performance and unique aesthetics—with classic Big-Block muscle
If you’re looking to make the ultimate underhood statement, look no further than the incomparable Ram Jet 502. It blends the legendary torque and performance of the Big-Block with a modern port fuel injection system and tunnel ram-style high-rise intake manifold. In short, it’s the best of both worlds in a visually stunning presentation.

The bottom end of the Ram Jet 502 is the same sturdy assembly used on other 502-inch crate engines. It includes a stronger cylinder block and all-forged reciprocating assembly. A hydraulic roller camshaftdelivers 0.527/0.544-inch lift specs, and aluminum oval-port heads with 2.250-inch/1.880-inch valves serve as the engine’s lungs.
The unique Ram Jet fuel injection system stands 11 inches tall at its highest point and consists of a two-piece manifold/plenum assembly, eight injectors, a throttle body, and an updated MEFI 4 controller. Setup instructions are included, making it a simple “plug-and-play” installation.
You’ll need to check your ride for clearance before closing the hood over the Ram Jet 502. Then again, it looks so impressive, you may just want to cruise around with the hood off!"

I saw about a half dozen 502s here in Myrtle Beach at the spring car show this past March.
